Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

For me, as with so much else in life, this comes down to Heavy D vs Metallica

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

why don't you just [guitar noise]

electricsound, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

"Winter In July."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

wretched. any chart in which 'more than words' is one of the better choices is on some next level bullshit trip

electricsound, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

Oh god, this is shite! It's so hard between C&C, Heavy D and Paula Abdul. And yeah, I like "Enter Sandman". And, come to think of it, that's Cathy Dennis' best solo single. Toss up, I'll go with "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm" as it was one of the first songs I ever bought on single.

edwardo, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Whenever we hold each other
We hold each other"

Michael Stipe: proto-Rick Ross?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:34 (seventeen years ago)

Three years after Ricky "Chewy Raccoon" Ross morelike

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

26. Sophie Lawrence - Love's Unkind

^^^this the same chick that played Diane Butcher?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed it was.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

Ah, the days of Simon Mayo's breakfast show where he would grind his teeth when reading out the credit "C&C Music Factory featuring F Williams."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

'Summertime', purely because it reminds me of being in New York that summer and constantly hearing it on the radio.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:43 (seventeen years ago)

"One eye open, gripping your pillow tight"

lol anal sex

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

My inner 14 year-old would've never forgiven me for not voting Metallica. Even though it's far from their best song.

There really is a bunch of crap here.

chap, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

I like 11 of the songs here.

De La Soul is dead goodest tho.

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

38. Flowered Up - It's On/Egg Rush

need to hear this again but Studio's 'No Comply' really reminds me of it (or at least my memory of it)

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Weekender was their only good song, but then I'm thinking of voting for More than Words so what do I know.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Move Any Mountain but didn't notice Enter Sandman on there. Gah.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

13 songs I like on this list.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

Enter Sandman was playing the first time I got off with a girl in a club.

Recall Bang being universally regarded as Blur's worst song until Country House arrived - except in Italy, where everyone always asked why they didn't play it

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

"I'm too Sexy", easily!

There's about 5 or 6 tracks I kind of like, but cheese was obv the in sound of '91, going by that.

Worst is the OMD "Pandora's Box" single. They played that when I saw them last year, it was goddamn awful.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

I definitely want to see them on the upcoming Dazzle Ships tour, though.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

Pandora's Box isn't really that bad (bad for them I guess). I hated it at the time mind you.

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

and not that we would, of course, but if there was ever a Michael Bolt-On singles poll, this one is probably the best :o

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Judge Dale always plays Michael Double-Coiffure Bolton whenever the opportunity arises.

His considered thoughts on "Time, Love And Tenderness":
"Good track."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

As much as I loved "Things That Make You Go Hmm..." when I was eight (kind of an inappropriate song for an eight-year-old, actually), I have to give it to Heavy D.

!Alicia!, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry. I have to give it to Heavy D And The Boyz. I didn't mean to leave The Boyz out.

!Alicia!, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Pandora's Box isn't really that bad

I just put it up on youtube. It's terrible! And I like Louise Brooks. Playing "Electricity" now to purge the lyrics from my mind.

are they touring "Dazzle Ships"? the greatest hits section of the set at Galsagow was so woeful that I didn't bother seeing them in Newcastle on their hits tour. A "Dazzle Ships" tour I could be interested in, though.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

McCluskey was on the Radcliffe show last night and he said that was what they were going to do later this year.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I'll go and see that for sure. I saw it the first time round, it was so good, one of the best live sets I've ever seen.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

This is a much better chart than the last couple. Gonna give the vote to De La, for being the technicolourest thing on here.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

HEY WATCH THAT, it's a Saturday

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

"Bang". Allegedly the first "Britpop" song and Blur's greatest single until "Sunday Sunday".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

And "Pandora's Box" >>>>>>>>>>>> most of "Dazzle Ships".

Actually I considered it their best single since the two "Joan Or Arc" ones at the time. A great catchy pop song that finally had a more "analogue" sound again for the first time since, well, since those two, actually.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 March 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

Ryan Adams all the way.

wsl maxima, Thursday, 13 March 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

Dazzle ships tour?

OMD to tour Architecture And Morality

Wake me for the Dazzle Ships tour.

Be careful what you wish for, ay?

Funnily enough, I bought the remaster yesterday. Will have to see.

Mark G, Thursday, 13 March 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

Odd. One of the happiest times in my life, both emotionally and musically, and absolutely no part of the music is reflected in the top 40. I honestly don't know what to vote for here. I'm tempted to go for "Bang" simply because I woke up with it in my head this morning before I'd seen this thread, and that kind of co-incidence doesn't happen often. My heart says vote OMD, but "Pandora's box" was a bit crap really. But then I always loved "Near wild heaven". And really, "I'm too sexy" defined that summer as much as "Anything I do".

A Dazzle Ships tour? I'd be there for that!

Rob M v2, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

The 90s UK charts were at their best in 1995-96 though.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:19 (seventeen years ago)

'Popscene' was allegdly the first britpop song according to Justine Freidman, not 'Bang'.

flowersdie, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

A bit amelodic for Geir, I think.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

First britpop song = "You Were Made For Me" by Freddy and the Dreamers, surely.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

Marie Lloyd to thread.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

Marie Lloyd, mockney art student.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

Johnny Ruskin to thread.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

'Popscene' was allegdly the first britpop song according to Justine Freidman, not 'Bang'.

"Bang" has all of those XTC/Kinks-like harmonies in the chorus. Now, it may be that "Made Of Stone" was the first Britpop song, but "Bang" was definitely the start of Blur's Britpop style.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

Should never overlook the debt the Britpop scene owed to Joe Dolce's "Shaddapa Ya Face".

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

Marie Lloyd to thread.

Pretty sure we can blame this bitch for Lady Sov as well.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 March 2008 10:55 (seventeen years ago)

'bang' was blur's shot at a baggy beat, which they later disowned cos it's crap

braveclub, Thursday, 13 March 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

oh wait 'there's no other way' was baggy too wasn't it?

braveclub, Thursday, 13 March 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

"There's No Other Way" is Steve Lamacq's least favourite Blur single.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 March 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

Then again, Steve Lamacq's favourite single is "Just The One" by the Levellers.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 March 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

'bang' was blur's shot at a baggy beat, which they later disowned cos it's crap

Damon Albarn has disowned several of his best songs ("Country House" is his best ever moment), while the actual crap is the stuff he makes these days.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 March 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

I could put you in touch with Damon if you like, and you can tell him exactly where he's gone wrong. I'm sure he'd appreciate your thoughts.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 March 2008 13:13 (seventeen years ago)

i like 'Bang' a bit

blueski, Thursday, 13 March 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

the one before it is much better tho yes

blueski, Thursday, 13 March 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

voted for OMD - Pandora's Box

stephen, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Set Adrift On A Memory Bliss" still sounds great, and gets my vote.

Dan S, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 05:58 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck, I wish I hadn't voted for "Move Any Mountain" this morning.
