This, in its original form, is an $800 LP. I stumbled across the limited vinyl reissue (circa 2000) yesterday. This is rather amazing. Most of the songs seem to be about his dysfunctional life ("I beat my wife and my kids too...") or his time in Vietnam. The title refers to Harper's bourbon, which was apparently the drink of choice at the time. It's acoustic guitar with bass & drums accompaniment on most tracks. It rings all kinds of alarm buzzers for me, reminiscent of Gene Clark's "White Light", John Wesley Harding as well as stuff like Tim Hardin and Fred Neil; folk music adopting the rhythm section of contemporary rock and country music, still quiet and laid back but with some extra oomph.
Apparently you can get a CD copy of it at http://fjmcmahon.com/

THIS IS EVEN BETTER THAN THE JAY BOLOTIN LP, GUYS. AND MILES BEYOND M.C. OSSO.
― ian, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)
I guess it's more of a bluesy folk record than a countrified one. It's awesome. You need it, people.

we need more private press threads on ILX. we only have that christian one, and everyone knows that with (very) few exceptions those are garbage. speaking of religious private press weirdos, any bets on how awesome/awful the Ya Ho Wa reunion is going to be?
― ian, Thursday, 13 March 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)
Wait, what? A Ya Ho Wa reunion? REALLY?

NYC @ Knitting Factory with Spectre Folk, NNCK & Tom Greenwood, in early April.

Yeah, they're playing a show out here or something. Forget the details.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think i want to see that. that just sounds like it's got a 99% chance of spoiling the greatness of their albums. steinberger guitars and cheap keyboards. the mind reels.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 13 March 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)
You guys know the record "EAST WINDS" by Addison? Totally positive-vibes country stuff. Lots of banjo & mandolin, a few really good songs-- "Savings & Loan"!!! Recording quality is good overall.
― ian, Monday, 2 March 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)
okay, so that one ruled.moving on now to Mark Brine "American Pieces"? Cheap keyboard organ setting notwithstanding, this is kind fo endearing. "It's looooove, in the purest form, as touchin' as when their babes'll be booooorrn."

I found a copy of Bill Cooley & Alan Munson "In Debt." Released On Studio West? I'm not sure if it's private press or not, but I'm enjoying it. Nice folk with slight country/psych vibes. Also found Emily Bindiger's only lp "Emily" which I'm slightly disappointed in. It's not bad, there are a few lovely jesus loving folk songs on it. But it's not as amazing as I had hope for, but I bought for a dollar!

That Cooley/Munson is a pretty desirable record! I've got the reissue, really enjoy it.
― not everything is a campfire (ian), Saturday, 15 January 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)
Have you heard the two solo Munson records? Those were the ones I've been looking for when I saw the Cooley & Munson record by chance.

Finally got Pat Gatti's Someone... Somewhere!! It's a really nice lounge folk record with tape effects and one vocal side and instrumental side. Yoga records reissued it, but you can sometimes find the original on ebay for under 20 and it's worth it. Also of not is Patrick John Brayer's Cold Feelings, low down bluesy folk. Really inventive and completely lonely and devastating! We need more talk about private press country bangers!

every song on that Vernon Wray record is a jam! I heard a rumor that there was also a cassette only release by Vernon?
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 29 January 2012 08:02 (thirteen years ago)
damn, hadn't heard about that but I will be looking into that for sure
― Chris S, Sunday, 29 January 2012 09:18 (thirteen years ago)
After listening to John Villemonte's second version of 'I Am The Moonight' on This, I'm convinced it's far better than the first version on 'People like us'. More dreamy and less lonely, longer flute passages too!
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 2 September 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago)
Actually all of 'This' is less lonely and somber than 'People Like You' lots of morning sunshine, the open air of pastures, it's music that makes me smile.
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 2 September 2012 15:58 (twelve years ago)
i want to hear that record sometime.

really feeling this record this afternoon. found the CD at a garage sale last year but only just got around to giving it a spin.

― budo jeru, Saturday, 6 June 2020 22:21 (five years ago)
it leans more straight downer / loner country than the s/t link wray LP on polydor but still occasionally descends into degenerate hillbilly funk with lots of wild scraping guitars etc. link on guitar and doug on drums throughout.
― budo jeru, Saturday, 6 June 2020 22:26 (five years ago)
recorded at the shack as well?
― sleeve, Saturday, 6 June 2020 22:27 (five years ago)
yeah, at least partially. the liner notes credit the shack and a place called copper state sound:

Vernon puts his back into several hot tracks on Link's awes 2019 comp in the Bear Family Rocks series (yep it's BF, but not a big-price monster box). talked about it quite a bit on rockabilly essential thread. Haven't yet checked into him as true front man, although think he may have been credited that way on some mainly-Link releases. Yall might also like Rob Galbraith.
― dow, Saturday, 6 June 2020 22:58 (five years ago)
he went by ray vernon for most of the "missing links"-era stuff when he was leader. "wasted" LP his proper debut i think.
will check rob galbraith tho cursory glance is giving me "horrible 70s album titles" vibes :)
