Who ARE the better (live) band: Public Enemy or Hercules & Love Affair?

On Wednesday May 28, I face a gig-going dilemma.

At Nottingham Rock City, 20 years after their "legendary" appearance supporting Eric B & Rakim and LL Cool J (ie. it made some "most important gig ever" list in some music monthly or other), Public Enemy perform It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back in full. Chuck D, Flavour Flav and Profoessor Griff will all be appearing.

Three minutes' walk round the corner, Hercules & Love Affair play the smaller Rescue Rooms. Needless to say, the eight-piece line-up does not include Antony Hegarty.

So help me out here. Who would YOU go and see?

public enemy for several reasons

Hercules will probably be around again

PE will probably not be playing Nation in order often (also interesting to hear in full-band format if they're still doing that these days! this could be an argument against, too I spose)

I'm flying from NYC for that P.E. gig!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 14 March 2008 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

Go for PE. They'll probably be a bit disappointing but Hercules will tour that album into the ground and probably with Antony on a fair few occasions.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 March 2008 07:36 (seventeen years ago)

My concern with PE is whether they're still up to the job. I attended that "legendary" 1988 show and was knocked out by them (as we all were), and I wouldn't want that memory to be sullied. But yes, it's a one-off and H&LA will doubtless tour again.

Has anyone seen either act recently?

Well, I live in Nottingham and am going to see neither, so that is my answer. However, if I were forced to choose, it would DEFINITELY be Public Enemy. I saw them a few years ago at ATP, and they were amazing (though after 2 hours it started to drag a little). I would actually like to be going to this show.

i saw PE at vegoose and i know a festival is totally different from a real concert but i was pleasantly surprised without being blown away by any stretch of the imagination

Hercules and Love Affair play Chicago next weekend. Anyone know if Antony will be there?

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 13 October 2008 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

how was the show, Mike?

It was fantastic - and so long that, despite starting their set 30 mins later than PE, Nomi and Andy from H&LA were spotted watching the end of the PE set from the back of the hall.

But oh, how I *wish* I could have seen Hercules as well.

(Here's the review what I wrote for the paper.)

I asked on another thread and was told that Antony does not tour with them. But I'll be at that show nonetheless.

Saw Hercules & Love Affair do a great 40-minute warehouse show to 3000 shirtless roid cases, 500 14-yr-old girls and two grumpy dykes a fortnight ago.

Saw Public Enemy do the Nation Of Millions/hits show to a thousand 30-yr-old white guys and 30 dragged-along 21-yr-old girlfriends last night: with Griff and James Bomb not leaving the US due to "passport issues", Flavor not making it to the stage due to "United Airlines issues", and the band not going on until a quarter to midnight.

Mike made the right choice.
