Haven't yet plunged back before MMJ; how's it? And on a related note, I can't get into fixed:contents. I must suck or something.

You don't suck! I love that record, but I think they've gradually pared back their sound, so it might be good for you to hear it in the context of their earlier albums. Well, MMJ is stunning - cinematic, languid twangy guitar over absolutely gorgeous synth and bass backdrops. Their earlier stuff is more glazed-eyes scraping drone stuff, which I fucking love. The last track on their first album (Prazision LP) called "Everlast" is one of their most incredible moments. That stuff is more hazy, psychedelic, suffocating, and uneasy-feeling - absolutely worth checking into.

Their first two albums are my favourites. "Soft Return" from Prazision is virtually a pop song. A Stable Reference is their most satisfying, IMO.

My vote goes to the self-titled third album. It's got a nice sinister edge to it.

I seem to keep forgetting to post here. Read these thorts and you will know my mind, but I prefer Mi Media as their best.

first three are key; after that they started getting less and less interesting, becoming more focused on soundtracky blandness. or maybe i just noticed their soundtracky blandness more once the vocals (which were one of my favorite things about the band) went away.

The self-titled is good, though some might not favor it for the gloomy, almost goth atmosphere. The first song is nothing but chainlike sounds clanging and being dragged around .. and then there's two tracks worth of Labradford at their most 'pop,' which just means they've got some vocals about city blocks and broken glass. It's the perfect rainy-day-stuck-indoors-feeling-vaguely- sorry-for-oneself-but-enjoying-the-feeling record.

I'd go for "A Stable Reference". Real gothic cathedral music.

one year passes...
Fixed::Content is awesome.

i was going to post something til i realised i already posted exactly what i was going to post. although i'd add that "scenic recovery" (the 10" on duophonic) is ace too

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Julius / Columna De Indepencia" 7" (on Merge, IIRC) is nice, too.

fixed:content sounds like windy and carl or early charles atlas or a bunch of other similar albums which made it not so classic labradford in my book. Good, yeah, but I like similar stuff by other people. The s/t Labradford album (white one) is still my favorite because it's the first one I heard and so it's the quintessential one for me.

Prazision and S/t are classic. I can't remember which record preceded Mi Media (It's late, I'm lazy)but I'm sure AMG can help you out. Fixed:Context was ok-ish. But I think I was just bored with them at that time. I should probably dig it out from the record crate...

Funny how everyone seems to ignore "E Luxo So".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 31 October 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart E Luxo So, I rate it right after MMJ.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 31 October 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

el luxo so is my favorite one after the self titled one

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 31 October 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

E luxo so got me through many a night of essay writing. Bad side effect of that is my immediate reaction to any of the pieces on that album is the thought of Foucault, Jewish elegiac traditions, apocalyptic eschatology, Jean Rhys, and (ack!) Lacan.

three years pass...

In an 'it all comes around again' moment, Prasizion LP's being reissued in the current Kranky CD packaging style -- remastered, extra track (B-side to the A-side that was the bonus track on the first CD, etc.)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 October 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Prasizion is still my favourite LP they've done and C Of People is still my favourite song they've done
