That's a bit harsh, Jesus and the Mary Chains made 1 good record. Still voting Mary Jane Girls, like.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 16 March 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

This is a brilliant idea for a poll. I'll vote Mary Jane Girls, too.

Bimble, Sunday, 16 March 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

You are quite clearly wrong. Jesus and Mary Chain.

I know, right?, Sunday, 16 March 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

The Jesus & Mary Chain actually made music, as opposed to wiggling their backsides about in front of cameras and lip-synching, so they win, obviously.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 March 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus and the Mary Chains made 1 good record

Actually, compilations aside, they made three exceptionally brilliant albums, one very good one, and two passably decent ones.

only MJGs I've heard is "In My House."

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

you need 'all night long' in your life, son.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

"All Night Long" has one of my favorite basslines ever, but The Jesus and Mary Chain just made too many great songs, and when combined with their early cool factor and feedback-then-hey-we-write-amazing-songs-watch-this-no-feedback move make them one of the best bands ever and the overwhelming winners in this poll.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Candyman"! "Candyman"! "Candyman"! "Candyman"! "Candyman"!

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

the MJG and the Mary Chain only have one song apiece, with minor variations -- love how on the singles comp "April Skies" and "Happy When It Rains" sound like you're playing exactly the same song back to back. I find "In My House vaguely annoying, though, which to be fair is a feeling the Mary Chain provoke too.

A draw!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

Wow this is a cool song and I've never even heard it before:

Bimble, Sunday, 16 March 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

xpost, I think if you're not particularly drawn to them, any band can sound like they have one song. I think both of these groups had songs that sounded obviously very different. "Sidewalking" doesn't sound like "April Skies" and neither sound like "Head" and none of those sound like "Drop" etc etc etc.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 16 March 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

Does the winner of this thread go into a playoff against Nate Dogg?

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 16 March 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Steve Albini never covered a Jesus & Mary Chain song.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Only one had Rick James in their corner. They get the vote.

pipecock, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

I don't see how people are pretending there's any distinction - both of these acts' albums feature the exact same personnel

J0hn D., Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

Not true. Remember when they collaborated on the "Psycho Candy Man" single and played it live together on Soul Train?

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

i am a fan, but jamc have ripped themselves off time and time again. it doesn't bother me, but to pretend otherwise is bonkers

You know I'm right.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:17 (seventeen years ago)

it depends on how you view ass wiggling

I know, right?, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

Toss-up as to which act is the more overtly dope-related, so in a backside-wiggling tie-breaker, MJG > JAMC.

briania, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

I think the problem here is JAMC didn't do enough ass-wiggling. Amirite?

Bimble, Thursday, 20 March 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

Not saying they didn't end up that way, but in the early days they had a great variety to their songs.

It's odd now because live all their songs sound EXACTLY the same. Even "Vegetable Man". It was really disappointing compared to their early shows.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 20 March 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

I passed by them at electric picnic and they just sounded like Status Quo.

I would like to point out that I have been OTM in this thread.

The Reverend, Sunday, 22 June 2008 07:36 (seventeen years ago)

Bahahah! I love this thread. My old hard drive crashed and I was forced to post about Candy Man on my blog. Also that song by Rick James called "Glow" = I have played that like 33 times today.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 22 June 2008 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Wild & Crazy Love" is another especially good Mary Jane Girls song.
