'Thirty years on from the original event, we wanted to celebrate what was achieved. Rock Against Racism was a very underrated political movement, and was hugely influential, along with the Anti-Nazi League, in stopping the rise of the BNP in the late Seventies. Unfortunately, we've actually got a bigger problem than we had then, with the rise of fascism over the past five years, and it's vital that we have a huge event in London, prior to the London Assembly Elections, to send out a message.'

- iraq war, security state, etc. = fascism. i'm down with this awesome analogy, obviously. i guess he's also saying that
- boris johnson = fascism. which is arguable, but ya boy ken is a member of the labour party what has been doing the fasicisming over the last five years [s]and he's an anti-semite dbag[s], rite?

politics is confusing.

also think he means NF not BNP. either way, bang-up job on stopping their rise dudes.

Rather hard to quantify exactly how much of an impact RAR had in the late 70s in stopping the NF from gaining any real political power or influence, although their aims were noble enough.

And yeah, people using "fascism" to describe any swing to the right at all in politics is pretty dumb.

"we've actually got a bigger problem than we had then"

With what? Right wing extremists? Not exactly sure about the stats, but the NF had way more support back in the day than the BNP has now. Unless he means that the occupation of Iraq is a bigger problem than street level racism in the late 70s. But that's apples and oranges, isn't it?

great thread

banriquit, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

The anti racists of the 70s were busy fighting prejudice, hate and racist, while some anti racists of the oughties seem more busy fighting white guys with guitars. So 70s any way.

I don't think so. Probably about the same. More likely less. How many NF councillors were there?

Tom D., Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

never were.

Mark G, Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

it's all the SWP anyway

DG, Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

But did they stand for councils? I don't know where this idea that everyone was in the 70s was a racist/xenophobe comes from. I blame "Life On Mars" (xp)

Tom D., Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

and Mind Your Neighbour

blueski, Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

People still less likely to vote for a racist/fascist party than they are now

Tom D., Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

more likely to vote Tory now?

Seen any Skrewdriver gigs in your town recently Geir? No? That's the modern anti-racists' doing that is! OK they got Dodgy banned as well but you can't make an omelette etc

The 1978 concert featured the Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Tom Robinson Band, X-Ray Spex, the Ruts, Sham 69 and Steel Pulse.

The 2008 line-up is still being finalised, but confirmed acts as OMM went to press include Babyshambles, the Paddingtons, Roll Deep (who released 'Racist People' last year, as part of the LoveMusicHateRacism campaign), Patrick Wolf, Nihal and Benga. A few of the old guard will also be returning to the stage, including original headliner Tom Robinson, and the Specials' Jerry Dammers, who will be pulling together a band including former Sham 69 frontman Jimmy Pursey.

Looks like there's not much interest any more.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

I guess Morrissey wasn't even asked.

I have to congratulate you for defying all statistical evidence by starting an ILM race thread that no one at all gave a flying fuck about.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 March 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)
