Voted "I Want To Hold Your Hand", as I plan to vote for another (and better) Beatles single in the 1963 poll.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 17 March 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

And, of course, while there are four American songs at the very top, there are few American entries in the rest of the list.

You Really Got Me

Shit, maybe Baby Love

our work is never over, Monday, 17 March 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Baby Love for being a perfect pop song. The Beatles entries all are too, but they'll be getting plenty of props.

Dave Clark Five, "Bits And Pieces"

^Absolute banger.

DavidM, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

Everything's coming up Dusty! I went for IJDKWTDWM.

mike t-diva, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

"You really got me"

There's never been a bad cover version of this, but similarly there's never been a really great version. Apart from the original.

Mark G, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

Unless you count the Jethro Tull one... ;-)

For sentimental reasons I'm going for "Glad All Over" 'cos it was number one the day I was born...

Note the similarity in the intros to "Bits And Pieces" and "Where Did Our Love Go?" and, bless them, Holland-Dozier-Holland subsequently put their hands up and said it was a fair cop...

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

JT one, bad or great? I can imagin...

Mark G, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:10 (seventeen years ago)

Well they did rename it "Living In The Past"...

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

this is impossible

braveclub, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

check out that flute solo

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 17 March 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

Of course, for a good "All Day And All Of The Night" cover (i.e. not the Stranglers one), look no further than "Hello I Love You" by the Doors.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

This should be Really Got Me

zeus, Friday, 28 March 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 29 March 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Way too few votes for The Beatles of course. Before 1966, there wasn't much else that counted.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 29 March 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

No, look at it this way.

Add up the artist votes:

The Supremes 5
The Beatles 4
Roy Orbison 4
The Kinks 4
Dave Clark Five 3
The Searchers 2
Jim Reeves 1
The Rolling Stones 2
Dusty Springfield 2
Manfred Mann 1

Which reflects things moreso. Even the Beatles would have voted for the Supremes.

Mark G, Saturday, 29 March 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

The Beatles didn't realise themselves how much better they were than any of their R&B influences

(that being said, Holland/Dozier/Holland were great - really great)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 29 March 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

HolDozHol wrote a great many songs. Many many many.

The Beatles may have been 'better' than their R&B influences, but not when they were playing R&B.

Anyway, I'm over and out.

Mark G, Saturday, 29 March 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

There wasn't much point for The Beatles in playing R&B at all, except Merseybeat/beat was partly influenced by R&B. The point of Merseybeat was combining the rawness and energy of R&B with the melodic and harmonic sophistication of Tin Pan Alley and European classical music.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 March 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

Also shagging birds.
