i was just listening to the blue one yesterday. monotonprodukt02 26y++
OH YEAH. Dancing & Singing is "Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance."
Genius. How is the blue one? I never picked it up.

i was jamming this on a trainride a while back and it went perfect with the rolling scenery

the opening track always floors me, the rest of it stays consistent but sometimes my attention wanders from it, not like that isn't the point
as for minimal electronic it's got contemporaries in Schnitzler's 'Ballet Statique', John Bender's first record (especially the mumblevocals), Moebius & Beerbohm's 'Doppelschnitt' and to an extent some of the longer early Tietchens tracks so this record's in good company, and it does hint at things like Porter Ricks & Mike Ink about 10-15 years early
I'm curious about the blue one too

Classic, and yes, totally did a double-take after hearing a track from this for the first time, looking it up and seeing the year.
Favourite track: think it's "Water" I'm thinking of but I can never remember which is which between that and "Fish". Why does 20y++ have track names in English whereas according to discogs the original has them in German?
More contemporary recommendations would be great too. What I've heard of Conrad Schnitzler's late 70s/early 80s work has all been a lot more abstract than this (except the one with his son - does this upset purists? I don't know what to make of the ranty vocal piece at all but there's a couple of great tracks on there), so I'm really looking for anything else which hints at things like Porter Ricks & Mike Ink about 10-15 years early, but all recommendations gratefully received.

"blau" sounds more 70s or something, lotsa cheap rhythm machine and delay (one song's even called "dubwise"), amorphous noisiness and bleep-blooping. actually does remind me of schnitzler a little bit, doesn't really have quite that ahead of its time quality of 07. more like the sketches before the masterpiece. still worth a listen, though.

Revive! So there is a 30y++ white vinyl reissue of this - and its beautiful. Really great stuff. Interesting interview over on FACT as well. I haven't really picked up on this record before the last few weeks listening, I somehow must have missed it being referred to on that old Wire magazine 100 Records That Set The World On Fire.
Gonna check out some of Milton's recommendations above. Great stuff.

Wasn't sure at first but it's really grown on me, I love that wiggly bassline that snakes in and out.
The FACT interview from last year doesn't seem to be on this thread:http://www.factmag.com/2012/07/30/monoton-one-of-electronic-musics-most-important-albums-revisited/

I found it interesting but yeah, I certainly take your point.
Just found a video he made in 1992 which features him in a suit describing rave culture as the means for a utopian reinvention of mankind or something ("cultural intelligence" also being a theme on which he seems to have written several books); this video also fits with your thesis but hey, monotonprodukt 07 is still an amazing record.

no doubt, one of the best of its era

on a whim I spring for the live recordings 79-89 CD: http://www.discogs.com/Monoton-Realtime/release/3103650
I like some tracks very much; some of it is extremely overdriven and distorted room recordings in the best kind of way. however, there are a lot of tracks where the vocals become quite comprehensible and those are not my favorite moments.

Monotonprodukt 07 is so amazing. Ike Yard are as amazing, here and there (Loss, Infra-Ton)
Schnitzler, not so much. But someone above mentioned Sprockets, and Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal is about as on the nose a Sprockets song as you're likely to hear (besides "Electric Cafe" on 45rpm)
