Anyone gonna vote for Out Of Step then?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 March 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

For me it's a toss-up between Out of Step, Filler and I Don't Wanna Hear It. I haven't decided yet.

MacDara, Monday, 17 March 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

i always kinda like how salad days ends all the fury with a sort of weird, sad, note

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 17 March 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

I had been listening to Minor Threat for years, but RATM's kind of crappy cover of "In My Eyes" really drove home to me what a cool, unfuckupable song it is. (They kind of fucked it up by playing it SLOWER, but whatever)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 17 March 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

But "Seeing Red" is right up there for me too.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 17 March 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

screaming at a wall

latebloomer, Monday, 17 March 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

M@tt He1ges0n OTM.

For me, it's that or "Betray" for the way it kicks off what I think is their best record.

I likes my hardcore cleeeen...

In My Eyes

Steppin' Stone close behind

Ivan, Monday, 17 March 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'm with latebloomer. Filler & In My Eyes close behind.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 17 March 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

'What the Fuck Have you done!!!!????....' Excellent.

Always loved the screw up guitar fuzz of 'Filler'

As much as I love the Eps, I always loved their- 3 minute plus!- 'Look Back and Laugh'.

'Salad Days' was a great, almost melancholic, closer.

'Minor Threat',for me though.

Fer Ark, Monday, 17 March 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Steppin' Stone

John Justen, Monday, 17 March 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Salad Days" or "Minor Threat"

"...but it's a promise!"

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 17 March 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

"I Don't Wanna Hear It" for me.

unperson, Monday, 17 March 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's salad days for me

I seriously considered "Cashing In", I love that tune so much.

But I went with "Seeing Red", old skool stylee.

sleeve, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

Tough choice between "Screaming At A Wall" and "Salad Days," but I voted for the former as I've been listening to it a lot lately.

"Sob Story" is a close third for the spoken-word segments alone.

mike a, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

Guessing no votes for "Guilty Of Being White," though?

mike a, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

Kudos - great poll idea - 'Minor Threat' it is for me - got me through college when it came out.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Minor Threat"! It's the great American novel in ninety seconds. Such a concise mission statement, it's so full of ambition and hubris but self-aware too. "we're all headed for that adult crash" - an admission that this won't last, can't last, in fact it's already done - he may be a adult, but he's a minor at heart he says... he knows he's already faking it on some level, he's already too old for this. it's grasping, reaching back. it's futile, impossible to hold back time and age. He's howling, "why is everybody in such a fucking rush?" but it's his own band in such a fucking rush behind him, he can barely keep up. as his band, his movement, his moment hurtles along as fast as it can. He knows the less of a minor he is, the more of an adult he is, the less of a threat he will be - he's losing the superpowers of being young and snotty and punk. He knows these attributes will be less and less threatening and more and more ridiculous as time wears on.

I've always loved that about Minor Threat - it's so perfectly doomed, so teenaged in a way that you just can't hold onto - teenaged in a way that you'd be crazy to want to hold onto because it's horrible, but the alternative, the adult crash, is even worse and you kind of know that too. they hate everything around them but they hate that everything is changing even more. they're nostalgic for the present because it's already gone.

Okay I've pulled this out and played it again because of this thread. I only started revsiting this stuff again less than a year ago, so it's wild to me. One thing I found out was that the Out of Step vinyl release stuff is especially wonderful. I don't know for sure if I really owned the vinyl of that back in the day. I did have the first two 7"es stuff, though. And I had the Salad Days 7".

So yes, even though "In My Eyes", "Cashing In" and "Good Guys (Don't Wear White)" are stunners, my vote goes to "Salad Days" for the awe-inspiring chiming bell noises in the intro alone. I mean for the intro to that song alone, it should get #1 in this poll.

Bimble, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 04:50 (seventeen years ago)

With one day's reflection, it's got to be "Salad Days." I first heard it when I was 18; I'm almost 42 now and it keeps taking on new meaning for me. When the bells come back in right before the last verse, it's one of the most melancholy and overwhelming moments rock music has to offer.

mike a, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

I must be the only person alive who doesn't like Salad Days :(

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

Hugely difficult choice, but I'll have to go with "Salad Days."

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Guessing no votes for "Guilty Of Being White," though?

Heh, you know it. And it's too bad, too, 'cause MUSICALLY that track's practically my favourite.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

voted "In My Eyes" for the music. lyrics are a little high schoolish but the guitar on this is my favorite, i'd love to hear a young greg ginn pull this off.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I could probably have predicted "In My Eyes" would win this from the start. I was really torn between it and "Minor Threat", but went with the latter.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 March 2008 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

Two for "Guilty" but none for "Look Back And Laugh?" I stand corrected.

mike a, Sunday, 23 March 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't vote but it wouldve been in my eyes

am0n, Sunday, 23 March 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)

also would've been in my eyes

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 March 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

I'm just happy Salad Days got as many votes as it did. I didn't really expect that.

Bimble, Sunday, 23 March 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I had seen this. "In My Eyes" is terrible, "Filler" by a mile.

31g, Sunday, 23 March 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

It is sad to see none for Look Back and Laugh, which was my favorite Minor Threat song epic back in high school. It was a great salve for all that adolescent drama.

I voted for Salad Days though. That BASS!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 23 March 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

this is really ruling right now.

"filler" is a great song...

dudes could really play, and wrote good songs.

"I was early to finish
I was late to start"

seems deeper than it is, somehow
