SANTIAGO, Chile, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Tickets for a concert by world famous Italian screen music composer Ennio Morricone sold out within hours here Sunday, leading to fierce protests by a group of disappointed fans.

The irate fans, some of whom failed to get a ticket after spending the whole night outside the ticket window, were protesting the shortage and chanting their demand for an extra concert.

Some violent protesters smashed a window, forcing intervention by riot police, who broke up the protest by forming a human wall. A truck carrying water cannon was also mobilized, but was not used.

Some 5,000 fans queued up outside the Mapocho Station Cultural Center for the 10,000 tickets on sale. But a lot of them were left without tickets.

Morricone is famous for composing the music for films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Mission, Cinema Paradiso and The Untouchables.

He has won several BAFTA awards, two Golden Globes and an Honorary Academy Award at the 2007 Oscars.
