"Shot By Both Sides" for:
a) being a manifesto (or maybe anti-manifesto);
b) being in the charts at the same time as "What Do I Get?";
c) inspiring "Chequered Love" by Kim Wilde.

Shot By Both Sides for being a lot better than Lipstick.

Bloody hell, am I the only person who prefers "Lipstick" then?

Rob M v2, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

Either/or is going to be the nemesis of humanity.

Didn't do him any good did it?

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

SBBS solo slaughters the Lipstick solo

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

well the guitar sound in general, it's in like a better key and sounds all taut and nervy and insane, Lipstick just sounds like Shelley had less of an idea what to do with the riff than HD

OTM

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

d) John McGeoch RIP.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

"Shot by Both Sides," not even close.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

shit, he's been dead for four years, that's crazy

There are some great videos of Magazine on Rockpalast or something on Youtube but I think it's Robin Simon on guitar by that stage, alas

The beginning of time.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Lipstick" for best ever lyrics of You Don't Love Me paranoia. Said sentiment later returning in a sublimated state in "You Say You Don't Love Me."

Not to knock "Shot" of course.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Always wondered if that riff was borrowed from King Crimson's "Red". (Could be.) I'll give this one to Magazine, tho I'll still take Buzzcocks everytime, bandwise.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Lipstick, for my late grandma both buying me Singles Going Steady and telling me she liked the song a lot. And for it being the better song.

Face of Wolf, Friday, 21 March 2008 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

Magazine always beat Buzzcocks.

This is arguable. Wrong, but arguable.

Mark G, Monday, 24 March 2008 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

this shouldn't really be a binary question.

there should be a slider and we set a position on perfection - which is actually slightly on the lipstick side. I feel I've just made this a chris morris sketch.

Sandy Blair, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

I like Buzzcocks better, but "Shot By Both Sides" beats "Lipstick", it's simple as that.

The Buzzcocks were a lot better when Devoto was in the band...

S-, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, no. I mean, he had left by the time of "Ever Fallen In Love", hadn't he. That one was a beautiful piece of pop punk, while Devoto didn't show his best side musically until Magazine.
