Monotonix The Chaos

Per Greg Kot, the official buzz-phrase coming out of SXSW this year from the big cigar/glass tower/old-guard record biz crowd was "Monetize the chaos."

Bollocks to that. I saw Israeli lunatics Monotonix in Austin three times, and then once more in Houston after SXSW ended.

They are the most feral, dangerous and exciting live rock band I've ever seen. I shudder to think what monetization would do to their brand of chaos.

Anybody here ever seen them?

no.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Had an EP of theirs to review earlier this year. Barely got through it once. Then into the trash with it.

Gorge, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Would go and see them live but the EP didn't have the X-factor (can you still say that?)

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

Probably. It wasn't just lacking in X-factor. It didn't have any factor.

Gorge, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

I missed 'em the last time they came through.

Damned by faint praise and ridiculous pics.

Gorge, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

Records are not so hot. But one of the best live shows around period.

jigglepanda.gif (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the only gimmick is the live show, and it's an enjoyable one.
the records are mediocre at best

Zeno, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

they opened for the silver jews and were tons of fun. music was sorta generic

a couple of pics from the show

"this band is no good but their singer rolls around on the ground."

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

and couch-surfs. wouldn't say they were no good, it was just sorta generic music. drummer had great chops/feel tho

6335, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, i enjoyed that EP that came out this year on Drag City. Not innovative or anything, but good crunchy hard rock ... Saw them open for the Joos a couple weeks back and it was a lot of fun.

i fucking love this band, and i generally despise new guitar-based rock.

gonna be a long hot summer for the MS Word paperclip (the table is the table), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

i like the song ride, which is on their split single with RTX and really want to see them live.

mizzell, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

as a hairy man, i really look up to them.

mizzell, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

when i saw them live, in fall of 07, i don't think i've ever been more pleased, even tho i was covered in sweat, beer, spit, soda, pretzels and other things by the end.

they opened for Old Time Relijun, and blew them out of the water.

three years pass...

Wonder if guitarist's new solo release is any good. Touring the US now too

http://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/yonatan-gat/

After five successful years, including one EP and two LP’s on Drag City and a world tour spanning 40 countries with his co-founded band, The New York-by-way-of-Tel-Aviv guitarist and composer took some time to himself, but not long before finding inspiration for a solo project while sound checking at a festival in Portugal.

The African influenced-punk tinged drums of Igor Domingues he heard on that sound check, inspired Gat to book a last minute improvised show with Domingues, which was recorded for a 7-inch EP called Live in Café au Lait. Gat soon returned to Portugal to record with Domingues in a studio in the large urban metropolis of Porto. Once there, Gat engineered, mixed and produced the album himself; playing every instrument except for drums played by Domingues. Inspired by the early work of Brazilian psychedelic experimentalists Os Mutantes. Gat’s truly amazing talents shine on Iberian Passage (out May 27th on Joyful Noise) as it blends together his punk rock influences with the improvisational spirit of Miles Davis. It can be heard in the lengthy shredded guitar riffs melted in between pulsing African inspired drums.

Ben Ratliff likes guitarist Yonatan Gat live. Here's an excerpt:

Since Mr. Gat moved to New York five years ago and started his own band, a mostly instrumental trio with the Brazilian bassist Sergio Sayeg and the Israeli drummer Gal Lazer, his playing has bloomed with the patience to develop any shred of riff or groove into collective improvisation. He’s pushing outward, drawing from some of the great cross-pollinated grooves in ’60s music.

And so during his set on Tuesday at Union Pool in Brooklyn, you might have heard echoes of funk from Benin; Cuban son from Senegal; Chicano rock from Los Angeles; Afro-Brazilian soul from Rio de Janeiro; and the pentatonic and Arabic scales that connect much of the world. Mr. Gat’s music is loud and aggressive — somewhere in his imagination, he’s playing for the Who — but there’s always a lilt and an invitation in it. He leaves a space for you to get in.

Folks that saw this trio last night in my town all basically said it was mind-blowingly good. Can't verify myself, but yeah seems they deliver the goods.

grandavis, Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:45 (eleven years ago)

huh! sounds intriguing.

tylerw, Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:56 (eleven years ago)

The term "jaw-dropping" was used with zero irony. I already had plans and had to skip. Sucks.

grandavis, Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:56 (eleven years ago)

sounds cool! http://yonatangat.bandcamp.com/
getting kind of an omar khorshid vibe?
guh, looks like they are coming out here but i'm out of town.

tylerw, Thursday, 5 March 2015 22:06 (eleven years ago)

euch, this shit is sick

Soylent News Service (contenderizer), Friday, 6 March 2015 04:42 (eleven years ago)

dunno about the live show, but the recordings are 1000% more interesting than monotonix

Soylent News Service (contenderizer), Friday, 6 March 2015 04:44 (eleven years ago)

I think there's a ilm thread for bands who put on wild and entertaining live shows but whose recordings don't live up to that. Monotonix are on that.

Already have plans so may likely miss Yonatan Gat opening for Of Montreal in DC Saturday night
