Reminds of Barack Obama view on Washington's present condition.

To me the song's genial appeal is partly in the fact that nothing that went on was all that bizarre, and the way he says "how bizarre" reflects that. The tone of voice of the whole thing is really really relaxed, and you get the sense that if anything bizarre did happen it wouldn't faze them all that much...

a friend of mine was a music director at a radio station and got a promo CD of this song, with really amateurish-looking art, about a year before it became a hit. i remember him solemnly swearing to his skeptical friends that the song was "going to be huge." something that seemed incredibly unlikely to me. but hey, look what happened. how bizarre.

I never really thought about this before but there is a huge resemblance between the ‘every time I look around’ refrain and the ‘every time I sit around’ / ‘every time I turn around’ bit at the end of ‘Summer Babe’. OMC were Pavement fans I’m guessing?
