Taking Sides: Kevin Shields vs. Jimi Shields

They are both great shoegazing guitarists. (And I've always wondered what it was like for Mr. and Mrs. Shields with two of their kids being noisy guitar players?)

How big was Jimi's actual contribution to Rollerskate Skinny? I love that first album of theirs, but then the second one without Shields the Younger is good too..

Both Rollerskate Skinny and Lotus Crown were pleasant without being great. I credit Jimi for trying, I guess.

And it's just me, of course, but calling Kevin a "great shoegazing guitarist" is like saying Miles Davis was a "great jazz trumpeter" -- it's accurate, but limiting. ;-)

K. Shields is a great guitarist, full stop.

I remember seeing Lotus Crown once without knowing anything about them, and really liking them, and after a few drinks speaking to Jimi Shields for a while, It went downhill the moment I found out he was Kevin Sheilds' brother, and immediately switched from praising the gig, to praising MBV, and asking if he had heard any of the "new stuff" (this was during one of those periods when it seemed a new album may be imminent: a few remixes were appearing at the time), and to get his brother to lift his fucking finger ,etc.

He was quite polite about it, but quickly made his excuses and left. I saw them again a few months later, but they weren't half as good, partly because the first time I'd see them they played purely instrumentally because Jimi had a sore throat, and his singing ruined the tunes IMHO.

So, Kevin it is then. As if there was any

four weeks pass...
Kevin shields is much better than his brother. My bloody valentine was fantastic and like many others I hope for some kind of output from Mr Shields.

Jimi Shields wins hands down, after all kevin shields is regarded as the nutcase of the family although when it comes to guitar playing then i say kevin, drums? jimi naturally. Did you know that one of kevins 3 sisters sang on loveless as bilinda had a bad throat and kevin was going mad...
