David Byrne - Dirty Old Town
The Cure - Close to Me Maxi-Single
Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers - That's What I Like
Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers - That Sounds Good to Me (this fascinated me at the time — a single where neither of the songs were on an album — "I could have missed this so easily!")
Soul II Soul - Back to Life
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House/This Must Be the Place (this was some sort of "classic tracks" reissue from about 1989)
Technotronic - Get Up (Before the Night is Over)

eatandoph, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 01:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Does anyone know what year they were introduced? I didn't really notice them until summer '88.

First one: The Escape Club's "Wild Wild West"
Last one: Jennifer Paige's "Crush"

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 02:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Technotronic - Get Up (Before the Night is Over)

another one i had!

wikipedia sez go-go's "vacation" was first major cassingle release but that they didn't really catch on til '87 or so. sounds about right.

Cassingles I have known:

Urban Dance Squad, "Deeper Shade of Soul"

and a couple from some mid-90s wanna-be hardcore white hip-hop group that I can't for the life of me remember the name of

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

ZTT were all over the cassingle.
they mainly consisted of remixes and extras that were unavailable elsewhere making them essential.
i used to have quite a few of them, but traded and passed onto ZTT collectors.
Also, Age of Chance did a couple when on Virgin. I still have those of course.
But the best I had was the 25 minute megamix for House Arrest by Krush.
i played that sucka to death.
literally.

mark e, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 07:09 (sixteen years ago) link

My first cassingle: Bow Wow Wow's Your Cassette Pet, early 1981.

My most essential cassingle: the mammoth super-super-extended 15 minute version of "Two Tribes". (ZTT did a similar thing with "Close (To The Edit)".)

My final cassingle: must have been around 1992. Never bought many, just when they were being flogged off for 50p or so.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:14 (sixteen years ago) link

First cassingle would also have been Your Cassette Pet.
Last one - probably Afroman's "Because I Got High." Don't ask me why.
Least dispensable one - have all the ZTT ones still but the cassingle of Into Battle With The Art Of Noise is still the most crucial.
Tackiest cassingle: 4 HITS BY BUCKS FIZZ

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't have that many really.

First one: "Perfect way" by Scritti Politti, in a rather nifty top-opening gold box.
Last one: "Interesting drug" by Morrissey, before I moved back home to a record player.
Favourite one: "Every day is like Sunday" by Morrissey. 4 perfect songs together.

Rob M v2, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:39 (sixteen years ago) link

well well, looks like we all fell in line with the ZTT Action Series.
I held onto Into Battle.. for years, but with it all now available on the AON boxset, I handed it over to a serious ZTT collector as I no longer have a machine on which to play cassettes.

mark e, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:43 (sixteen years ago) link

And I used to have a Mitsubishi multiple-cassette changer like this that would let you load up seven cassingles at a time, and it even had a random play feature. That was some crazy analog fun!

I haven't heard this in almost 20 years.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:07 (sixteen years ago) link

four years pass...

I guess what with hipster bands making cassettes again that it would only be a matter of time before someone came along with a cassingle...
