This is my first-ever "Can you ID this song?" thread - and it's not even for me!

Right, basically, here it is:

I happened across this newsgroup request a couple-three years ago (when it was ALREADY a few years old) and it's haunted me intermittently ever since - that somebody could recall so many lyrics verbatim and still be unable to ID the song, or find someone to ID it for them. So, for my own curiosity as much as (or more than) quizzical Kent's, how about it: Can anybody name this song?
