Gentlemen in landslide.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 04:26 (sixteen years ago) link

gentlemen will probably win, but my vote is for black love.
overlong, but i played the shit out of that cd for a year or two in high school.

i doubt enough people will vote in this poll for it to be thorough. someone needs to poll the afghan whigs listserv, if such a thing exists.

ian, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 04:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i wanted 1965 to be great when it came out and it just kind of wasn't

gff, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 04:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought about voting for Black Love too.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 04:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Came very close to voting for the What Jail is Likw EP for the Ass Ponys cover alone - one of the best cover songs ever - but punked out and voted predictably. Sorry, but Gentleman = unfuckwithable

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm voting Black Love for sure.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:08 (sixteen years ago) link

gentlemen edges out black love on the strength of "my curse" which dulli doesn't even sing. I can't be bothered with anything else; some of it is nice, but most of it runs together. oh I like 'up in it' and 'uptownn avondale' a lot though

akm, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:13 (sixteen years ago) link

your kisses scourge me, hyssop in your perfume

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:26 (sixteen years ago) link

"my curse" is full of win. I would still vote Black Love because I haven't burned myself out on it as much as I have Gentlemen.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't care if it's predictable, Gentlemen for the win. Congregation is nice too.

MC, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 11:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Black Love, for the same reason as Ian.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 12:18 (sixteen years ago) link

The Afghan Whigs -- Histerectomy (Columbia eight-song promo sampler, 1998)

Best EP is the one with the Afghan Whigs' cover of TLC's "Creep" on it, but I don't think that's up there either.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Nope, it's not. That'd be:

The Afghan Whigs Honky's Ladder EP (Mute, 1996)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 12:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Gentlemen followed by Congregation

J0hn D., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 12:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Black Love for me, easy....I like Gentlemen but Black Love goes farther into Dulli's crazy blaxploitation/noir delusions of grandeur.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Yup.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Toughie. Coulda been Congregation, Gentleman but Black Love it is. That's the one I still play the most. The songs were great live too.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Gentlemen, then Congregation. The best and worst live band I've seen.

Andy K, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Black Love. I could write a Lefsetzian rant on that mofo.

Terrible Cold, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Black Love got ace reviews in the inkies and metal/rock mags here but is it true it didn't get much love in the US press? The same thing happened with Pavement - Wowee Zowie and Hüsker Dü - Candy Apple Grey IIRC.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember Black Love getting slammed in Rolling Stone.

Terrible Cold, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Back then that could have been the kiss of death.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

You mean there was a time people trusted Rolling Stone?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Just kidding. That time was back in the Buddy Bolden era.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

i have a thing for the first twilight singers record as i am a fila brazillia fanboy

cutty, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:26 (sixteen years ago) link

How did it get on in Spin?
x-post

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I wrote a long piece on the Afghan Whigs where IIRC I said Black Love was better than Congregation but that opinion hasn't held up for me. The depths of Congregation just feel more human & raw to me.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 18:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I voted for "black love" but haven't really listened to the whigs much in a while to be honest. "gentlemen" second. There was a v long running Whigs listserv "congregation" (I think), I don't know if it's still around, but went from mid 90s to at least a couple years ago. probably still going. they were great live.. but.. "miles iz ded" live = total guyville

daria-g, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I voted for Gentlemen: the first songs are still such a rush; "My Curse" and the last song are classic also.

Euler, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

what the fuck is "honky's ladder" about, btw? any interpretations?

akm, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 21:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Hardly anyone voting Twilight Singers yet? I mean, most of the Whigs records are excellent, but Blackberry Belle just does something else to me, entirely. That one's got my vote.

stephen, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:34 (sixteen years ago) link

And IIRC, Honky's Ladder was more of a single for that track than a full-stop EP release.

stephen, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

the EP was "bonnie and clyde" .. I don't know if that was only a radio promotion thing? i have one but got it from my college station

daria-g, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:47 (sixteen years ago) link

congregation

electricsound, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"bonnie and clyde" was hidden track duet of Dean Wareham and her of Stereolab singing Serge Gainsbourg's song on Luna's Penthouse. But probably a different b&c.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 3 April 2008 04:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Does "Black Love" have "Going to Town"? 'Cause that might sway me from voting for "Gentlemen".

Morley Timmons, Thursday, 3 April 2008 05:26 (sixteen years ago) link

"blackberry belle" is great, why did I never listen to this before?

daria-g, Thursday, 3 April 2008 05:29 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah Black Love has GTT and all kinds of other sexy jams. Such a great companion piece to Gentlemen, maybe my favorite 90's tandem.

Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 06:07 (sixteen years ago) link

"blackberry belle" is great, why did I never listen to this before?

YESSSSS!!!

also: no love for 1965 here?? that album is 3/4 absolutely over-the-top *fantastic*.

stephen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

1965 is the only Afghan Whigs album I've heard, and I loved it when it came out. I just bought Gentlemen on the strength of some of the comments on this thread!

nate woolls, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

You won't be disappointed - it's one of the best records of the nineties and it actually holds up well today

i think 1965 is pretty bad

akm, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not their best but it certainly isn't bad.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

another gem: the Uptown Avondale EP!!

i mean, has there been a better covers EP/album released, ever?

stephen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

That's a great ep.

Good to see so many votes for Congregation and Black Love but not surprised the lurkers voted Gentlemen.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 7 April 2008 00:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I hadn't listened to twilight singers until this week. haven't heard the first record. "Blackberry Belle" I really like. rented a car & took a drive down 95 listening to that one yesterday.
currently relistening to "gentlemen" (brother woodrow/closing prayer = gorgeous), it makes me feel kind of ill, i didn't really get back then how messed up it is.

"Powder Burns," something seems off...

daria-g, Monday, 7 April 2008 00:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Twilight As Played By... is gorgeous, wish he'd wanted to keep doing that sort of stuff on the side instead of just turning the name into Greg Dulli's Rockin' Revue.

energy flash gordon, Monday, 7 April 2008 04:12 (sixteen years ago) link

great stuff from J0hn there btw

energy flash gordon, Monday, 7 April 2008 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Powder Burns tries too hard to rock out. Same with the worse songs on Blackberry Belle. Slinky and creepy is where Dulli excels.

<3 East 17th & Into the Street off the first album. Had to vote Gentlemen though.

bnw, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

From the LPTJ review of Gentlemen:

"By the time one gets through the ballad, “My Curse,” sung achingly by Scrawl’s Jody Stephens...."

uh.... is that supposed to be a funny joke?

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, it wasn't Alex Chilton singing it, that's for sure.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago) link

How are The Gutter Twins live?

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Consensus seems to be "much stiffer than the similar Twilight-Singers-with-Lanegan lineup" that was out the last couple of years

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 00:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Are you kidding? Saw 'em a week ago, they were fucking incredible.

stephen, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:09 (sixteen years ago) link

"Powder Burns," something seems off...

agreed; not Dulli's best record by a long shot, but a few great songs on there, regardless.

stephen, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Are you kidding?

Just going by nerds! TS-w/-Lanegan is the only Dulli that's ever come here, and they were HORRIBLY stiff, so I'd hope it's not the case.

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:22 (sixteen years ago) link

YEAH, BUT what are you gonna do about the Afghan Whigs? Here’s this band from Ohio that sprung up right around the same time as all those other bands that cropped up like herbicide-resistant weeds in the wake of Nevermind -- you know who I mean: Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins

This timeline isn't correct. And I never associated them with STP and AiC.

Man, there is some great Shaft-style hi-hat + wacka-wacka guitar on Black Love.

can't comprehend how out of all of that someone would vote for the gutter twins

fauxmarc, Monday, 5 January 2009 04:29 (sixteen years ago) link

So are any of The Twilight Singers records worth hearing? I loved the Afghan Whigs but have completely lost touch with anything Greg Dulli has done since.

ilx chilton (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 5 January 2009 06:01 (sixteen years ago) link

His new live albume "Live at Triple Door" is great, with a beautiful version of "King Only." Then again, I like the Twilight Singers and the Gutter Twins better than Afghan Whigs.

thirdalternative, Monday, 5 January 2009 06:11 (sixteen years ago) link

So are any of The Twilight Singers records worth hearing?

The first one is completely gorgeous, but a completely different band/idea to the subsequent ones. The Gutter Twins record beats any of the later TS albums proper, but She Loves You comes close due to cohesion of concept. Haven't heard Amber Headlights or the live non-physical-release one.

Pulled out Amber Headlights just now to give "Cigarettes" a listen, and then got caught up in "Domani". It's basically just an album incomplete or discarded ideas, but these two songs are as good as any he's ever recorded, Whigs or otherwise. GOD DAMN.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:24 (eleven years ago) link

I seem to have my annual Dulli period in January, apparently.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:28 (eleven years ago) link

you should be more or less constantly in heat for dulli tbh

mookieproof, Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:29 (eleven years ago) link

Good point.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:30 (eleven years ago) link

The thing about "Cigarettes" is that it's half-reprised as "Get the Wheel" on Amber Headlights, but is also monkeyed around with as "Follow You Down" on Blackberry Belle and neither alternate version is even a quarter as good as "Cigarettes". idg why he buried it on his solo joint that barely anyone ever heard.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:32 (eleven years ago) link

bcz of the circs of the entirety of Amber Headlights getting buried and then turned into a solo joint, I'd warrant

Apparently he is working on new material with Steve Kilbey!!?? This show would be a lot more intriguing if they were going to have the Whigs rhythm section + Marty & Peter.

“An Evening With Steve Kilbey & Greg Dulli “ will feature the duo performing a stripped down set. Kilbey & Dulli will perform a wide selection of songs encompassing both of their careers along with debuting several new ones.
