Doesn't really matter, just wanted to discuss this worst of early 00s genres.

Looking through the NME single of the week lists from the early 00s is one of the most dispiriting exercises you can imagine.

Every one of these acts is the absolute pits, it's true. Peaches probably the least worst, though that's not saying much.

I remember when I thought Peaches' (Peaches's?) first album was the future of music. It wasn't, but it's a great, great album regardless. Who cares if it doesn't last, though? I think most of the acts would almost be horrified if their music DID last.

Princess Superstar has at least two awesome albums. Even when she went total electro production on "My Machine" she ripped.

She was clearly someone who deeply cared about writing rhymes instead of just some proto-Uffie bullshit, and it's unfair to lump her in with this shit just because she started doing DJ gigs to make scratch.

I liked a bunch of this when it broke out (always hated Har Mar and Peaches grew old lol the next fastest). I guess it's possible people were buying into it with the idea "well this seems like music built to last, I look forward to jamming this in ten years" but somehow I doubt it.

I actually once got hatemail from Gold Chains for flaming him on my blog LOL.

All of the Cex releases up to this time were classified as IDM (Intelligent dance music) and had very little vocals or lyrics for the most part. However, Kidwell was not content to stay behind the laptop while on tour, and quickly and openly aspired to become "#1 Entertainer". He started to hone freestyling skills and performing new songs with vocal tracks like "who's the man with no clothes, underwear, fur coat, chilling in the alley?/I'm the man with no clothes, underwear, fur coat/he's brandishing knives!" ("Fur Coat") and "I know you're stressed/'cause there's only one Cex/and your girlfriend's pissed/'cause you ain't him" ("One Cex"). His vocal style was very confrontational and nearly atonal, and contained typically outrageous braggadocio; he frequently would go out of his way to chat to his audience between or in the middle of songs, and was known to strip down to his underwear (or less) from time to time.
