This was the first Fugazi album I ever heard, and it took me some getting used to Ian's drill sergeant voice so for a while my favorite song was "Sweet and Low." I think now it's "Last Chance For A Slow Dance," though.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

Awesome album, my favourite Fugazi.

Smallpox Champion.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

Cassavettes for me.

paulhw, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Sweet and Low or Last Chance or Rend It, this is tough.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

Love this album. Only have it on cassette. Voted Smallpox Champion.
In a Fugazi albums poll, this would get my vote.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Another for Smallpox Champion.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

it's either "returning the screw" or "great cop"

latebloomer, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Great Cop"

DavidM, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

Smallpox Champion!!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

I spent years pronouncing "Fugazi" the wrong way, until I heard Al Pacino say it in Donnie Brasco. Now I still pronounce it incorrectly, because everybody else in the UK does anyway.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

how does the UK pronounce it?

latebloomer, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

Fu-gah-zi. Al Pacino says Fu-gay-zi, which I assume is the proper way to say it.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

fu-gah-zi is the right way, at least for the band

latebloomer, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

Ah!

nate woolls, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

They're two different words, one Italian slang, the other a military slang acronym:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fugazi

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

i'm sure the origin of the military slang is the italian slang.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

it's a backronym!

latebloomer, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Smallpox. Best possible opener in a Fugazi show, best possible mid-set-let's-jump-again song in a Fugazi show.

Too bad there aren't any more Fugazi shows.

Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Holy shit, what an album

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I would lean this way in a fav fugazi poll. Always thought Repeater and The Argument were a bit over-rated. (still awesome, though)

will, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

AAAAHHHOoooooohhhhh...SHUT UP!!!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

There was a Fugazi album poll i think.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

best Fugazi album

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

and this one before it: Best of Fugazi records (poll ends 9th of may)

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

for shits and gigles, combined results of those 2 polls:

The Argument 34
Repeater 27
In on the Kill Taker 24
13 Songs 20
End Hits 11
Red Medicine 16
Steady Diet of Nothing 12
Instrument 0
Furniture 0

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-CHAMPION!

kate78, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Shocked at the low placement of End Hits (consensus at the time seemed to be that it was their best). Not the least bit shocked at the low placement of Steady Diet (consensus at the time seemed to be that it sounded half-assed).

Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

There was a time when End Hits was my favorite but I NEVER got the impression that was a consensus.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

Not the least bit shocked at the low placement of Steady Diet

Other than Nice New Outfit, there's not much on that one.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

Long Division is pretty awesome

WTF with people liking The Argument, End Hits and Kill taker and Red Medicine are wayyy better

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

you'd make a great cop you fucking piiiiig

dan m, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't get you Steady Diet haters. It's my favourite Fugazi album - swings and grooves from first track to last, full of hooks, and I don't think Canty and Lally have been captured better on tape. Seriously, you don't know what you're missing.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

I voted smallpox champion. My favorite Fugazi record is probably End Hits. It's not perfect, but the most interesting.

wateryDomestic, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

or say in life even

Hurting 2, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

23 beats off - the feedback is sublime.

stevie, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

It's just too hard to decide.

Seeing them open with "Cassavettes" at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. (in maybe '95/'96) was pretty amazing.

Dub Narcotic opened the show and made lots of Oscars jokes, with Calvin Johnson doing a Tatum-O'Neill-accepting-her-Oscar impression.

Then Fugazi came on and just blew the place up, making their own kinda Hollywood statement.

Guy's songs are just unimpeachable on this album. some shade of bruise colored blue

Shit, it's JUST TOO HARD TO DECIDE

Savannah Smiles, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

I once read something where a guy argued that the end of 23 beats off was evidence that Ian and the boys had started doing drugs, and that there was no other possible explanation.

call all destroyer, Monday, 7 April 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Cha cha cha cha cha cha champions, btw.

the end of 23 beats off is awesome, and that is what i voted for.

I heard this song for the first time in decades and thought to myself "these guys must have been high when they wrote/played this..." and then coming into this thread to post such only to find out it is not an original thought at all...

There was this car alarm that would always go off outside my office that I thought sounded exactly like Sweet and Low

never really knew but I mean did Fugazi ever claim to be straight edge? didn't know what the official word was

just felt like a lot of stock was being put into one song one member wrote as a teen, which the rest had nothing to do with

iirc there's a scene where some members of the band are drinking wine in instrument

pretty weird for a supposedly sxe band to make a track like "version"

anyway rend it/23 beats/sweet&low is sooo good still

"Wow, ___ must have been high to write this" is a take I have honestly never understood. I know a lot of sober people who make the wildest shit. Anyway, most Fugazi songs are written off of jams, and I'm sure there's a pile of rehearsal tapes somewhere that is full of stuff that's just as weird as 23 Beats Off that they just decided to leave off-record.

Someone I know who toured with them toward the end of their run said that the weirdest thing Fugazi had with them on the road was a dryer outfitted with casters so it could be rolled and loaded into/out of venues, so everyone in the band could throw their sweaty clothes in the dryer post show to dry them (not wash mind you only dry) so they could wear them the next night.

The person telling me this, who I think I could safely describe as "fastidious" and if you told me he had his own homemade cologne I would not be surprised, described the smell after a couple of shows as APPALLING.

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 22 April 2020 19:59 (five years ago)

wow more like Fusweati

still think this is prob my favorite one.

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 22:07 (five years ago)

Yeah, this is my favourite Fugazi. It's the first I heard and still feels the most fully formed. 23 Beats Off doesn't sound that incongrous to me - it makes total sense in the general soundscaping of rage and frustration.

Anyway, holy shit I was just dancing, grotesquely, and screaming 'my love song went wrong' at the walls and the fricking window cleaner appeared! (They're key workers, apparently?!)
