If you are talking about those distant booming sounds, it's a field recording of the Stanlow refinery just outside Liverpool that Andy Mcluskey recorded for the track.

This song is absolutely gorgeous. When the synths at 2:37 come in, and then at 2:57 the next layer of synths, I want to stay in those moments forever.
