With news of a new album

dEUS return this spring with “Vantage Point”, their boldest - and perhaps finest - album to date, featuring guest vocal appearances from Karin Dreijer Andersson from The Knife and Guy Garvey of Elbow.

“Vantage Point” finds dEUS at their most adventurous and self-assured, containing moments of brooding grandeur, via propulsive rhythms, icy synths, deadly riffs and punk-funk grooves. dEUS remain as eclectic as ever, though this new release also finds them at their most emotive and melody-driven, particularly on tracks such as “The Vanishing of Maria Schneider”, where Guy Garvey’s aching harmonies beautifully complement those of dEUS frontman Tom Barman.

Having secured their status as art-rock legends during the 90s… lionised by the likes of Radiohead and REM… it is clear that the best was yet to come, as dEUS stake out bold new frontiers for themselves on what is surely one of the finest albums of 2008…

“Vantage Point” is released on 28th April on V2/Cooperative Music… Live info to follow soon…

Is there even a question? In a Bar surely

robertwolf8080, Friday, 4 April 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

Worst Case Scenario for me

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 April 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

ahem.

yeah, it leaked

StanM, Friday, 4 April 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder if Nath will actually be able to choose

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Ideal Crash for sure.

The new one is awful. Pocket isn't much better.

Simon H., Friday, 4 April 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Pocket revolution is really good!

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

herman, you are a man of versatile taste!

for me, it's 'the ideal crash'. of only for 'magdalena' and 'dream sequence #1'

Charlie Howard, Saturday, 5 April 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

I've yet to hear My Sister yet, is it worth checking out?

Pocket has a few decent tracks ("Sun Ra" is fantastic) but it's mostly dreck. The new one is truly embarrassing in certain spots. Ideal Crash and In a Bar are among my favourite albums of the '90s.

Simon H., Saturday, 5 April 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

It is not mostly dreck. It's a really strong consistent album.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 5 April 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

I can see how people hear a good album in it, but mostly I notice Barman's vocal lines and lyrics taking a sharp turn towards the dull, some leaden alt-rock arrangements (particularly on "Bad Timing" and "If You Don't Get What You Want"), and an almost total retreat from the emotionally engaging aspects of the other records, except for maybe on "7 Days, 7 Weeks" and "Include Me Out." Even on those songs, the melodic aspects aren't as nearly rich as on Ideal Crash.

("Nothing Really Ends" is great but I don't consider it part of the album.)

Simon H., Saturday, 5 April 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

Pocket Revolution is, I think, sort of the beginning of the end tbh. :-( I am not sure which to choose. WorstCase is more influential, In A Bar is great cause it has different styles. Hmm. I love The Ideal Crash (wonderful album about past and future love).

TBH I'm not too bothered by the new one. I heard the single and I cringed. :-(

Simon, MySister=MyClock is pretty good but not essential. Better to check out for the B-sides. I Suffer Rock is one of my fave B-sides!

Also, WCS is from 1994? Oh man I feel old.

their boldest - and perhaps finest

Good lord, they can't be serious, right?

stevienixed, Sunday, 6 April 2008 07:35 (seventeen years ago)

I dont get the hate for Pocket Revolution, esp from you nath!

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 6 April 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

i played the new deus record. my oldest kid went:"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Not man singing. POOH MUSIC." she has good taste. ;-)

stevienixed, Monday, 7 April 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

haha

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 7 April 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

What do you think of the new album now?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

i've seen "I Suffer Rock" referenced in the most obscure places. It's an excellent song!

the next grozart, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

no way! where have you heard it mentioned? one of my fave songs evah

kerr, i think it's crap

stevienixed, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, I think I saw "I was 24 when my heart stopped beating" on some random person's Facebook/Myspace page. I was all totally "I KNOW WHAT SONG THAT'S FROM I DO!".

I've got a whole load of dEUS b-sides. What's particularly impressive is the live version of Hotellounge that goes into a 9-minute jazz fusion breakdwon.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 27 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Pocket Revolution at number 2 SHOCKA! Is it because that's the last (and possibly only) one that people have bought? I like In A Bar best.

the next grozart, Monday, 28 April 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

hmmmm people need to clean out their ears and give 'the ideal crash' a spin

Charlie Howard, Monday, 28 April 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

my sister=my clock is brilliant but totally different, it's like a collage of fragments rather than a collection of songs.

braveclub, Monday, 28 April 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

ideal crash is really great too but the best album won

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 28 April 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

Ideal Crash = In a Bar > WCS > MS=MC > PR >>> new album.

Simon H., Monday, 28 April 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

no

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 28 April 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

i found ideal crash a bit boring personally. a couple of standouts (Instant Street) but i actually think i prefer Pocket Rev just slightly.

the next grozart, Monday, 28 April 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

listening to the new one now. so far they'res not very much interesting going on.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

a few songs in and no, it's not interesting but it's not awful and there are a couple of bits that stand out. it does surprise me that they've gone from being a genuinely unique band using a whole lot of stylistic and insturmental ideas and experience, to what is essentially an MOR rock band with a few good hooks.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

yep, that sounds about right.

Simon H., Tuesday, 13 May 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

experience = experiments

ooh, "slow" is good - nice doomy epic vocal bit which is something i love in music.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

architect now - kind of cool, industrial funkiness. I can hear a bit of a David Bowie circa Station To Station coming through.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

i just find that 'the ideal crash' did that semi-conventional rock thing so much better and more convincingly than more acknowledged bands

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

i dont get the hate

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

what's happened with me with every dEUS album from The Ideal Crash onwards (new one included) is that initially i'm disappointed, but then the record grows on me, and finally i end up loving it to bits.

I am a huge fan of In a Bar... (still my favourite), but i think it's a good thing not every dEUS record sounds like this, they're all very distinctive in fact, but they all sound thoroughly dEUS-like.

braveclub, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i just think they were really onto something with the blues/befheart/fusion thing and it was something that not many other people did and that they did it very well, and am perplexed as to why they suddenly seem to be so happy doing this stuff now. I mean, it's pretty good, very textured etc, but it's so rigid and formalist now. i couldn't imagine dEUS doing something as mad as the live version of hotellounge today for instance. They're practically a different band. Was there a major line-up change after In A Bar?

the next grozart, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

well they did lose a guitarist and a bass player around that time. and very few of the newer tracks feature the whole band playing - it's heavily studio-based, although that was probably true of some of the older records too.

braveclub, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

I was lucky to see the WCS line up. when they played T In The Park 1995 i think. My Sister ... was just out.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

very lucky, yes

one thing i really like about 'the ideal crash' i might add, is that it captures some really inspired, thoughtful moods and channels them in a really effective way. a track like 'dream sequence # 1' is a really moving song if you approach it in a certain frame of mind. 'sister dew' and 'magdalena' touch me in a similar way too.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

i still can't get into Ideal Crash, but then i only came to it after hearing Pocket Revolution (despite being a long time fan of mid-90s dEUS), so maybe if i'd heard them in order it would've made more sense. I like Instant Street and Sister Dew though.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

pocket rev is rather nice. pretty solid throughout. 7 days, 7 weeks and nothing really ends are both great.
