does the first album have 10 songs on it? i forget

Some people here will likely give you a hard time about liking The Decemberists. That aside, it's cheating to include The Tain as one song and half the songs on your list are kind of lame. Summersong? The Infanta? Crane Wife Pt. 3? Come on.

My list would probably go:

CA1/Youth and Beauty Brigade
Red Right Ankle
Grace Cathedral Hill
Clementine
Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect
The Gymnast High Above the Ground
I Was Meant for the Stage
On the Busmall
Billy Liar
The Island (this might also count as cheating, so I'd pick The Landlord's Daughter)

does the first album have 10 songs on it? i forget

Yeah it does, that was almost going to be my answer, but I really like Her Majesty and a couple of tracks from the other ones.

You would think a board called "I Love Music" would be frothing at the opportunity to talk about The Decemberists!

ciderpress, I think you have to start your own thread if you want to talk about Captain Beyond. This thread is about The Decemberists. Don't break the rules.

I am not a fake, Noodle Vague.

St3ve Goldb3rg:

The last two Decemberists albums are my favorites! What can I say.... I like a lot of the songs off those albums more.

Robby in HR, Sunday, 6 April 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Prithee, 'Tis A Chambermaid"
"13 Doubloons and 12 Zloty For The Governess"
"The Boat-Swan's Song"
"The Fenian Cyclist"
"The Guillotinee, Pts 1 & 2"

Maybe a fake thread, but oh well. I've been listening to a fair amount of Decemberists lately, so I'll take a stab at my top ten:

"Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect"
"California One Youth and Beauty Brigade"
"Los Angeles, I'm Yours"
"Grace Cathedral Hill"
"16 Military Wives"
"My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist"
"The Crane Wife 1 & 2"
"Everything I Try To Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right"
"Leslie Anne Levine"
"The Gymnast, High Above the Ground"

^^very similar to my top 10.

"Everything I Try To Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right"

This is a good one. But I think it sounds really similar to Busmall, and I think I like that one better.

I think CA1/YABB and Red Right Ankle are the two best things they've done though. The latter reminds me of Leonard Cohen in a way. I wish they'd be more like that and less like, I dunno, Mariner's Revenge Song.

Favorites from each album:

"Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect"
"The Gymnast, High Above the Ground"
"The Engine Driver"
"Yankee Bayonet"

jaymc, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

The same as Steve's, except I'll switch "Island" for "Tain," "Billy Liar" for "The Engine Driver" and "I Was Meant for the Stage" for "Los Angeles, I'm Yours."

Simon H., Friday, 11 April 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

If you ask me, Engine Driver is just the poor man's Architect.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Saturday, 12 April 2008 00:06 (seventeen years ago)
