Thanks for this! I think I've got the full version of that Napalm Death show on DVD somewhere.

The Napalm Death part of this was floating around on some punk videos torrent site a few years back, haven't seen the rest of it though!

Thanks Herman - that was very special, and you turned a lonely night around for me. Discuss (as Brian Eno might say):
- Why is Brian Eno implicitly presented as the antithesis of heavy metal through the choice of music at the start? I disagree.
- Lemmy playing the classic power chord at the beginning - if anyone wants to know why power chords, heavily distorted, are at the root of all metal, perhaps this sequence says it all.
- Ozzy is not stupid is he? He's very articulate if you catch him at the right time.
- the brilliant showmanship of Slayer, starting from the back of the stage and all walking forward as they begin that classic riff, as if they are massing for battle, reminding us that rock music is, in part, an act of theatre.
- Steppenwolf footage - WOW. Very very cool, those cats!
- Napalm Death waltzing around the question of Satanism. Come on, call a spade a spade. When are we going to hear some commonsense about psychological rebellion? 'I'd like to think we've grown out of it' sounds like something you hear from a middle aged geography teacher. Why is rebellion something you grow out of? Is it truly moral to accept the hierarchy of religious delusion as you found it? What is the relation between belief and evil? What psychological attitude does Satan represent, anyway? There's surely some rich material here. I would've liked to see something deeper.
Only on episode three...! Back to the show...

Bruce Dickinson's an enigma isn't he? He can fly a plane, he can write a novel, but he is so ironically distanced from the spirit of heavy metal isn't he? He's a bit lycra. What's with the comic distance? Does he really think it's a big joke? Explain it to me, ILM critics. Iron Maiden... wff? I call bullshit.
― moley, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)
the eno music was arena's theme tune. it didn't have anything to do with just this edition.
― Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)
The juxtaposition was perfectly clear. Eno and then... Motorhead!!! Disprespectful and ignorant. Anyone who appreciates heavy metal must surely understand the value of mood setting, and Brian Eno.
Why have we not heard from Rob Halford, incidentally? I'm in episode 4 and no Rob Halford, no Glen Tipton, no Judas Priest.
― moley, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)
it started the same as every other arena, and then it went "hey this one's about heavy metal guys!! BANG". so in a sense because most arenas are not about heavy metal but rather anthony burgess or kenneth williams, it was presenting the subject as the antithesis of..most arenas, not the eno theme.

You also have to realize that these bands were at the height of their fame and had zero perspective during the filming of this movie.
Most could say something much more insightful into a camera nowadays.
