18th Dye "Amorine Queen" C/D

Even though I'm the only person who posts/reads the 18th Dye thread, for the most part.

Thought I'd start a new one. They reformed after a long absence. Played a bunch of shows, though I doubt they'll ever be back to the US (damn!). New album "Amorine Queen" is out, and it's quite good. I always thought they were underrated back in the 90's (and am convinced that if anyone had really pushed their mostly-vinyl-only track "Coffee Cup Revisited" it coulda been an alterna hit).

So "Amorine Queen" seems to be their psychedelic album (in the same sense that Wire went psychedelic) right down to the cover art. Way less minimal than where they were headed, and very different production than Albini supplied. I'm still sorting things out, but I hear at least 4-5 classic tracks, and nothing particularly bad. I've been anticipating this one for a l-o-o-o-o-ng time, and right now it seems like it was worth it. Not that I hear much new stuff these days, but this did get me to turn off the Fleetwood Mac for a full three days!

Anyone else out there following these guys?

Wow, a US tour would be pretty amazing!

For anyone who's interested, mp3's can be bought here (this is how I got ahold of it) and as of now if I were going to get just one song it would be "Backdoor":

I do not work for or with the band : )

one year passes...

Bought this today on a whim because I'd been listening to Tribute to a Bus so much. At first I was a little disappointed, but realized that I just missed Steve Albini's production. This is great - it experiments more. I like the heaviness of Song for Helen and Is, Backdoor is the best song Sonic Youth never wrote (mean this in a kind way). Big Sky changes the rhythm nicely...but my fave is Chinese Spoon. Just great. I like this band a great deal.

Worth turning this into a 2-person thread if only to sing the praises of "Air." Epic and cheesy, for them. Which means good.

Whoa! I've just recently been hoping somebody out there would talk about 18th Dye again. Tribute To A Bus is one of the best albums I've purchased in the last year, and I really wanted to talk about them, but there isn't much talk here.

So its good huh? I've got that album on my list with the rest of their stuff, but some clips kind of had we worrying at first... maybe it was the production. Excited to hear it! Tell me more about it. Or we can just talk about Tribute to a Bus. Someone should.

First listen, I was decidedly worried. Actually, it's the first song. Melodically I don't get it, and it bugs me. From then, though, it's wonderful. The 2nd half especially. The songs are perhaps better than Tribute to a Bus. Production isn't as good, but what is. I was at this show last year. Terrific.

Compositionally its a bit straightforward for them, where on Tribute to a Bus all of the songs sort of consciously try not to be what a casual listener may find as typical, structurally.

And I'm very jealous- I'd love to see them live.

Hmm, you might be right. Do you know Film School? They sound like they've moved towards a sound that's a little less deconstructed, more shoegaze.

Film School are pretty good.. at least on their self-titled, which I thought was damn good. I saw them last year at the Siren Festival in New York and they were alright. I really do like their self-titled a lot though, for some reason I love the beginning half of the song "Sick Of The Shame.," very pretty. Haven't heard much else besides that album and what they played live. Nothing wrong with moving towards a shoegaze sound in my book.

Oh! I posted before clicking play on that youtube vid... that song is off of their self-titled. Good stuff!

one month passes...

So I went back and bought Done, partly on the strength of "Whole Wide World," which a friend put on a mix for me a while back. It's good! More lo fi, disaffected, but these guys continue to deliver (as I go backwards). Evan?

paulhw, Friday, 21 August 2009 00:40 (sixteen years ago)

Aw man, I really want to get Done! It has been on my to-get list or awhile. So its good! Awesome. "More lo-fi" already has me on board! Once I get it I'll share my thoughts.

Evan, Friday, 21 August 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I have all of the rest of the 18th Dye albums on my list still... but if you want some more recommendations I've been stumbling upon lately let me know. Wish I had more 18th Dye stuff to talk about by now. Shame on me.

Everything they did was good. I hate to say this, but keep an eye out for the very-hard-to-find singles comp. "Left" because it's got some crucial stuff on it.
