Derek B

Heard "Good Groove" on the Capital Gold retrochart rundown - these days much better than boring old Dale and his POTP diet of Phil Collins and Rod Stewart - the other day and it sounds quite endearingly naive with its M4 callouts and mechanical vocal rhythms though obviously of its time.

I also remember Reynolds being quite sniffily complimentary about the album in his MM review - something along the lines of "this'll do until the new Public Enemy album's out." It wasn't exactly Nation Of Millions but it wasn't too bad either for what it was.

Whatever became of him?

A friend told me that when they were kids, they'd go into his record shop and go "Derek B? YOU'RE WACK!!" and dash out quickly, knochdown gigner style.

I always felt the flak he attracted was out-of-proportion to the quality of the music. I still like Bad Young Brother.

At the time there was a big part of me which wanted Derek B to be Derek Bailey but then the latter did go on to do a drum 'n bass album.

I like Bad Young Brother too... thanks to my musical cult friends I finally have a copy of it too.

His rapping is not very fast, making it easy to understand what he is saying.

I also like Bad Young Brother! I've got it on House Hits '88.

Yeah, it was a big hit when it came out there in 2003.
