Beyond the fact that they're allegedly both brother/sister acts (yeah, yeah I know...the Whites were actually married...whatever, who cares? Like it affects the music?) writes Alex, insisting as ever that Oranges are not Apples...

But isn't how bands work (or fail to work) something to do with interpersonal chemistry/electricity? Sibling telepathy? Wibbling rivalry? Not to mention bedhopping envy (cf Fleetwood Mac hurrah)?

The Everlys were terrific harmonisers because their voices were already genetically so similar: there's an element of spooky flesh-and-bone robotics going on.

The velvet underground were terrific because reed and cale were former lovers, with all the whatevah THAT entails yippeee!?¿!

(One of these examples is possibly less factually grounded than the other...)

Hey don't forget to credit which Alex is being quoted (it's not me in this case) else we will rise up and form Voltralex and destroy your puny island.

Inside detailed explanation on how this phenomenon works or doesn't work priced eminently unreasonably...

dave q, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it works by telepathy, genetics, robotics and sexual rage, same as everything else

mark s, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah yeah mark but SOME PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW and be desperate enough to take me up on my eminently unreasonable offer OK dig???? I'm trying to make a dishonest pound here

Did John Lennon and George Harrison sleep together, or did I just hallucinate that?

Judd Nelson, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if the creepy beauty of the carpenters there IN the sound (= genetic-telepathic) or is it something WE read back into the sound, because we know what we know (which the sound nevertheless doesn't DENY...)?

OK, there's something I don't know here. Tell me more.

The main thing I can think of is that interpersonal tension can affect the music greatly, through competition between key players and a process of oneupmanship (surely the need for Lennon and McCartney to write better songs than the other affected the quality of their output?).
