Rocker Eyes "Holographic Touring" to Save Planet
April 09, 2008
Billboard/Reuters

Serj Tankian, the frontman for Los Angeles rock band System of a Down, is so dedicated to saving the planet that he wants to launch a virtual concert tour to reduce his carbon footprint.

"I've had an idea for a long time, which might sound a little crazy, but I really want to look into holographic touring," Tankian told Billboard.

"I think we could reduce our need to travel if we could project ourselves into meetings and concerts. We have the technology, and we're not using it right now."

He suggested that he could broadcast a show in real time from his home studio, and he could interact with fans as if they were in the same room.

"After all, it's not like the audience can touch me, anyway," he said with a laugh.
"It would open up a whole new world for touring -- shows wouldn't have to be limited to bars or clubs. There would be no travel costs, so bands with very little money could play shows, and tickets would cost less."

While many musicians are becoming more active in promoting green issues, Tankian has gone a step further by connecting environmental issues to issues of poverty and war.
He formed the grassroots organization Axis of Justice with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello to rally musicians and music fans in the quest for peace, human rights and social equity.

"The connections can be drawn because they are present in so many places," he said. "Even materials that are supposed to be environmentally friendly can be harmful to poor communities. Biodiesel, for example, uses up farmland that could otherwise be used to grow food for starving people." Billboard/Reuters

HOLOGRAMS: AWZOM !!!!

jhøshea, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

My first question is how this would affect the bottle-throwing demographic of their fanbase. Would they be like "What's the point?" and give up, or would they see this as license to really pile it on?

I'm holding out for holographic crowd-surfing.

This will not work and I don't feel like writing a thesis on Deconstruction to explain why.

Because REALTIME STREAMING HOLOGRAMS ARE CHEAP?

Would there really be much of difference between watching a hologram and watching a standard projection on a screen? From the audience perspective I think probably not.

So hold on, do the audience watch this from home or do they go to a club or hall? You could have Serj projected into your living room! In fact he wouldn't even need to tour - he could just do the one gig and everyone in the world could watch it at the same time. Maybe one show for the northern hemisphere and one for the south.

How depressing would it be to play a holographic concert to a mostly empty club?

1) Saving the energy it would cost to transport your band, entourage and equipment across the country for a tour is nice, but it's peanuts compared to the energy expended by the 10,000s of fans driving to the concert.

2) Would there really be much of difference between watching a hologram and watching a standard projection on a screen? From the audience perspective I think probably not. beat me to it.

which leads to

3) What if fans stay at home to watch the standard projected performance? Imagine, watching a live concert - on your own television, in the comfort of your own home! I'm thinking this could be revolutionary. They could probably even sell CDs of the audio from the same live concert!

as a tossed-out idea this is awesome

as a suggestion of a replacement for the concert experience/somehow significantly more "green"/cheaper its ludicrous

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello

i note he's no longer "ex-RATM guitarist" are they officially back now?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

gabbneb, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

Holographic vomit will not live up to its promise until we have a stable smell-o-vision technology.

libcrypt, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAA it seems ludicrous J-rock band X Japan have already done this! The story is something like : their guitarist Hide committed suicide a few years ago, and at their reunion concert last month they had a holographic projection of him onstage playing along! See for yourself (he comes in at about 3 minutes) :

Is this the kind of look Serj is after?

Matt #2, Friday, 11 April 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

So, do we the audience beam ourselves into SOAD's front room also?

Otherwise, wow yeah this really worked for Sandi Thom didnit?
