I just came across psycho-acoustic while springcleaning (= putting records back into sleeves sigh), which is ES and Zeena Parkins, and track 2 ("Insomnia") is terrific. I used wuv Sharp, then I guess I got on Carbon LP too many, and cooled out. Now it's years later and I think I really like him again. Track 3 = "Pinball Logic" is EVEN BETTAH!!

he did a great LP on SST with the Soldier String Quartet called Tesselation Row (haha do you SEE!!)

In fact he was the best thing on SST: discuss.

Heard of him but thanks to yr thread just checked a website. A massive discog. Tesselation row is indeed a string quartet! And On SST!

I'll buy it if I find this (is it out of print?).

One of the artists that's too damn prolific for his own good. I say this as a listener wanting easy access to the good stuff, of course -- being that damn prolific is probably the best way to make a decent living as an avant-gardist.

My flatmate used to have that Elliot Sharp alb, and I used to have the Rhys Chatham rec that Homestead brought out at the same sorta time - both gone from the flat now, tho' I miss the Sharp more than the Chatham. Both of 'em weird hardcore rec label attempts to expand the music's vocab - but prob. too little too late...

But NOT the best rec ever released on SST (that wld be, ho hum, 'Double Nickel On The Dimes' prob.)

three years pass...
See, this is why I read The Wire. This guy sounds really interesting.

Can anyone do a POV/POX?

I've just downloaded Carbon 'Amusia' and this is really exiting my ears, what should I spend some money on? I'm equally as open to rock orientated stuff as I am his larger scale things. The Wire reccommends these:

Carbon - Monster Curve, Amusia
Terraplane - Blues For Next
Orchestra Carbon - Radiolaria
Elliott Sharp and Reinhold Friedl - Anostalgia
Elliott Sharp - Velocity of Hue, Radio Hyper-Yahoo

Anything else that I should check out?

I don't know most of these but Abstract Repressionism is a remarkable, essential album. Noise and dissonance are sculpted masterfully into an almost symphonic form and set to heavy beats too. I think it would definitely be of interest to fans of Japanese noise/prog stuff. I've also enjoyed a lot of his improv stuff. I have Terraplane, one of his rock/blues things. It's OK.

AR is with Orchestra Carbon, BTW.

(It can be a little challenging to make it through the whole thing in one sitting, mind, but still there's lots of great stuff there.)
