The Reverend, Thursday, 10 April 2008 03:48 (seventeen years ago)

ughhhh so hard. maybe "Butter". or "Excursions". or "What?". or "Scenario".

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

scenario. resisting the urge for revisionism by remembering busta's live flipout on mtv that somebody linked here last year or so? so fucking insane. I think he forgot half his own lines but whatever, everybody else in the audience covered for him.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

it weird ive listened to this album more than almost any other but i havent really heard it in years sooo... anyway i think im voting check the rhyme even tho that was never my fav when i was deep into this

the jazz/buggin out video combo was really good - oh this is such a great album

my freshman year in hs there was a lip sync concert and like a third of the songs were from low end theory - it just kept going on and on

jhøshea, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

Vibes

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

"Scenerio." Just a hair over "Buggin' Out"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

NOT A NOT A NOT A

not a damn thing

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

Scenario is obviously the best thing on the album, but it also doesn't fit at all, so I exclude it from contention

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:30 (seventeen years ago)

scenario is funny cause its the most famous song but doesnt really sound like the others - which isnt to say it doesnt work - its just weird cause the rest of the album has such a singular vibe and sound

jhøshea, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

I love the fact that the best songs on the album are the first and last song, and all of the songs in between.

HI DERE, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

that is pretty much its strength

jhøshea, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

Verses from the Abstract. I love Tribe but I always felt this album their 4th best after Midnight Marauders, Beats Rhymes and Life, and the debut whose name is too long to type.

ablaeser, Thursday, 10 April 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

Excursions. Because even if you'd never heard it before, ten seconds into the album you just know it's gonna kick ass.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 10 April 2008 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

Check the Rhime

deej, Thursday, 10 April 2008 06:37 (seventeen years ago)

buggin out, sort of randomly over jazz we've got, scenario, rhime, excursions, etc

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 10 April 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

do you know the importance of a skypager?

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 10 April 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

"Excursions": when the beat comes in is near the top of my favorite moments in music.

Euler, Thursday, 10 April 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

for some reason (even when i knew it was wrong) in my head it was "got more rhymes than Warner Brothers got family" and Phife was proclaiming his love for Bugs, Daffy etc.

zappi, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

This album has one of the best openings of all time. I fell completely in love with it 10 seconds in on my first listen and have adored it for almost 16 years.

HI DERE, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm
listening to low end theory now for the first time in a while. why do i find it so unremarkable?
'butter' still stands as my fave. maybe it's because i like the narrative, maybe it's the smooth sax line in the chorus. excellent track, but i've always had a tough time embracing a lot of the others.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

listening to low end theory now for the first time in a while. why do i find it so unremarkable?

Because so many people have ripped it off badly?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

Industry Rule #4,080!

No, I can't decide just yet. My short list is about half the album.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

haha whiney, you know that could be it. it does sound standardised to these ears, but probably only because i'm subconsciously recalling imitators when i play it...

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

observations about Scenario not really belonging to this album are bang otm but it's the best song here by a narrow margin over, like, half of the rest of the tracks, so it gets my vote.

actually deciding whether i prefer marauders or low end theory is like some aspie holy grail for me. a decade on and no closer to figuring it out but for some reason it seems very important for me to do so. great excuse to throw either on the stereo though.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

there is absolutely nothing wrong with a song being dramatically different from all the other songs on its albums, especially when it's as awesome as "Scenario" and works as well as it does in the context of Low End Theory.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

i think the degree to which 'scenario' sounds like it's from another album is being overstated a bit.

balls, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

yeah seriously. plus big insane posse cut at the end of relatively mellow and guest-less album is a GREAT formula.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

i mean if scenario popped up in the middle of the album it would be a bit 'wuh' but end of the album that move is kind of standard operating procedure.

balls, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

voted scenario btw, haven't heard the remix in forever.

balls, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

so we agree that the rest of the album has a definite feel to it that Scenario doesn't share? i think that's all anyone's saying.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

Scenario for he win

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

one thing i remember is this guy i knew who loved hip-hop but hated this type of pussy/hippie shit (big 'jus lyke compton' fan), completely unfamiliar w/ leaders of the new school, liked the song 'scenario' but was SHOCKED after watching the video that busta rhymes wasn't an old man. for some reason he was sure that the native tongues had some old man rapper (maybe he was thinking of arrested development?) and that the 'rraow rraow like a dungeon dragon' guy was it.

balls, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

"Vibes & Stuff" is going to get underrated here.

The Reverend, Monday, 14 April 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck it, I went for the advance single.

Best, and possibly only use of the words "tidbit" and "smidgeon" in all of hiphop.

what does it have to do with trivia? i actually don't know much of shit about hiphop like that, the guy who owns the record shop i work at won some hiphop trivia contest a couple years back in NYC hosted by Bobbito.

As challopsy as this sounds, I'm not that fond of "Scenario" -- it breaks the flow. But it works awesomely as a last song: it points the way forward.

Also:

Yeah Excursions was one of the first songs I listened to so much that I memorized it.
