New Os Mutantes

Sergio Dias is working on a new Os Mutantes record - the first in 30 years ! Arnaldo Baptista and Zelia Duncan will not be on board - let alone Rita Lee. But Tom Ze and Devendra appear on the album. First song, “Mutantes depois”, will be released on the internet.

So, does it seem a good idea?

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Thursday, 10 April 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

wow!

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 10 April 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

um, no?

Proof of the pud, I guess...

Mark G, Thursday, 10 April 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

the show at the barbican the year before last was awful

stevie, Thursday, 10 April 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

hey, so, anyone heard this? it's not new, but fuck it, this is a mutantes thread:

CILIBRINAS DO EDEN
Cilibrinas do Eden
(No Smoke)

Whoa! Where did this one come from?? An album's worth of totally awesome unreleased material from Rita Lee of Os Mutantes recorded for Philips in 1973! Cilibrinas do Eden consisted of Rita and friend Lucia Turnbull -- backed by the rest of Mutantes supposedly -- and these ten songs mix that band's psychedelic leanings with crazy Moog freakouts and straight up rock n roll that echoes of the Beatles and T. Rex. It's really hard to believe this material has been existed in complete obscurity for so long, as it ranks way up there with some of the best Mutantes stuff (and as a bonus, you get two great Mutantes outtakes). Limited to 500 copies so don't snooze on this genius.

that's from other music. i'd try to order it but 500 copies plus OMs horrible mailorder department and i don't want to get my hopes up.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'd imagine Forced Exposure or someone else (Aquarius?) has gotta have it, too.

Devendra appear on the album

do not want

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I ordered it. The CILIBRINAS DO EDEN one, that is.

I know they did "Lady Madonna" back in the day, wonder how you gets that?

Mark G, Friday, 11 April 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

like this song(ignore lame emo/goth video)

gershy, Friday, 11 April 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

CILIBRINAS DO EDEN has a rather disappointing rock n roll medley. Ever wanted to hear Rita Lee sing Tutti Frutti? Well, now you can.

ian, Friday, 11 April 2008 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

Festival Divino is a great song! Funny lyrics

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Friday, 11 April 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Right, it just arrived.

See, GOTT, just try and sometimes things happen.

Mark G, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

i ordered it, kinda pricey

gershy, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

a strange turn of events that Sergio Dias seems to have transformed into David Byrne on 'Mutantes Depois'.

not sure I think much else of the song at the moment.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 24 April 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

PEOPLE PEOPLE does CILIBRINAS DO EDEN suck or not? must know before entire run is scoopeded up

sanskrit, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Other Music reviews are useless to me people

sanskrit, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

HAlfway through.

Thinking Hmmmmmmmmm....

Safe to say, it does not suck. Track one is Faust style weirdness, the second more 'mutantes' nice, and so it goes. Liking it so far, maybe love it later, maybe not, dunno yet.

Worth a punt due to limitedness (my copy number 018 out of 500), so if no like, go ebay away)

Mark G, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

still haven't received it, please stand by

gershy, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

this is nice but not essential. i like the pretty, more acoustic stuff on the first half of the record, the second half gets more rockin' in a kinda retro 50s way.

gershy, Monday, 12 May 2008 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

Hey Whiney, how were they live?

Or to anyone else who's seen them recently...

I loved it. Tons of fun, a wicked band and they played all their hits. Others may disagree.

There was some discussion on the Tropicala thread.

everything, Friday, 9 October 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

Cool. I think they played Bumbershoot (local music festival that used to be free but is now super expensive), but I couldn't justify the cost & crowd hassle just to see em. Hope to get another chance soon.

I'm just up the road in Vancouver so I think I saw them a couple of nights before that Bumbershoot show happened. It ended up happening in a cinema that's only about 6 blocks from my house so I couldn't have been happier. Purist might complain about the fact that most of the people on stage were not previously in Os Mutantes, or that the set-list was essentially "Everything is Possible" plus a couple of new songs. But for me, the performances and the sound were quite stunning and the whole thing was full of infectious fun.

everything, Friday, 9 October 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

They were fantastic in Portland. Best guitar playing I've seen this year.

I was familiar with the band, but not their catalog. So I actually enjoyed the new tunes best (many of which sounded like Mr Bungle).

Great show. Totally worthwhile. I picked up a promo of the new album after the fact and would say those songs hit much harder live than in the studio.

Nate Carson, Friday, 9 October 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

They're really phenomenal live. Infectious fun.

I am not an animal, I'm a human SBing (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 9 October 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

saw them in Chicago. it was nice, but some of it was a bit too Guitar Hero for me (extended solos and stuff like that). kinda metal-y?

The new record is good too.

Ivan, Friday, 9 October 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

Metal-y = bad? Shame on you.

Nate Carson, Friday, 9 October 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

i listen to this song way more than any os mutantes record these days

buzza, Thursday, 30 August 2012 06:24 (thirteen years ago)

i saw them live a couple of years ago and it was horrible, just horrible

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

would not see w/o Rita
I mean even with her they would probably be bad but at least it would be a proper reunion

buzza, Friday, 31 August 2012 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't seen them in the non-Rita incarnation, but I'm gonna have to agree. It seems like there'd be a fundamental piece missing from the stew. Anyone seen them recently who disagrees? I'd be interested in their take.

softspool, Friday, 31 August 2012 04:45 (thirteen years ago)

they have neither Arnaldo Baptista nor Rita Lee now, do they? I had fun when I saw them but a good deal of that was just Sergio Dias' joy being infectious (especially useful when he's playing his fifteenth epic guitar solo of the night).

tubular, mondo, gnabry (Merdeyeux), Friday, 31 August 2012 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

I saw the first reunion gig at the Barbican and even then I felt something was missing, like the people on stage were just dressed up as Os Mutantes. I'd say they're fun if you go in with low expectations.

direct references of (seandalai), Friday, 31 August 2012 09:26 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, there was a DVD/Cd set I got of the 'reunion', it's alright and fun, etc.

But, the old fims of them being young and fun was key to the appeal, really.

Mark G, Friday, 31 August 2012 10:26 (thirteen years ago)

eight months pass...

starting to feel fool metal jacket. "into limbo" sounds like a dude singing a mellow candle song

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 9 May 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

twelve years pass...

Should I go and see what tours as Os Mutantes has in store, in 2025? Speaking as a very casual fan who has only ever streamed an album here and there over the years, but has noticed they are playing this weekend and obviously time is against us. Been playing the first three albums on a loop the last couple of days in trying to make this decision, and wondering if I've left it all a bit late (but am now loving them properly)

PaulTMA, Thursday, 24 July 2025 22:48 (three months ago)

yes go! saw them last week and twas the best time. bat macumba eh eh

llurk, Thursday, 24 July 2025 22:56 (three months ago)

Dunno how it would pertain to current shows, but here's my Voice review of
Mutantes Live—Barbican Theater, London, 2006
, which I really liked, though not everybody did, of course: https://myvil.blogspot.com/2016/06/sweet-peaks.html Later liked Haith, co-written w wizard Tom Ze.

dow, Thursday, 24 July 2025 23:39 (three months ago)

I saw them open up for the Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Bowl in... 2006 maybe? It was excellent.

Cow_Art, Friday, 25 July 2025 01:25 (three months ago)

i saw them a few years ago, it was awesome. was just sérgio and some folks, assuming it's the same?

budo jeru, Friday, 25 July 2025 01:30 (three months ago)

I've seen a couple of posts in much earlier ilx threads saying the reformed band were variants of "just horrible", dunno if it was the same person twice so wanted to check... I'm aware lineup-wise it'll be like going to see present-day 10cc

PaulTMA, Friday, 25 July 2025 09:35 (three months ago)

No rita no credibility

Black Sabaoth (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 25 July 2025 12:39 (three months ago)

Definetly go!

Blood On The Knobs, Friday, 25 July 2025 14:03 (three months ago)

*Definitely

Blood On The Knobs, Friday, 25 July 2025 14:03 (three months ago)

It's bleedin' sold out now! Got all the alerts set on the usual places now, though

PaulTMA, Friday, 25 July 2025 15:57 (three months ago)

Enjoyed them even if no Rita awhile back, but missed them on this tour

curmudgeon, Friday, 25 July 2025 17:16 (three months ago)

I got a ticket after all, I reckon it'll be great
