Taking Sides: "Maneater" vs. "Easy Lover"

Women be bitches, y'all.

So, in this corner, Daryl Hall and John Oates. In the other, Philip Bailey and Phil Collins. I honestly think this may be the most lopsided TS thread I've ever made, but let's see how it goes.

Maneater easily, if only for how the snare and vocals abrubptly kick in after the intro. Such a satisfying moment...

"Women be bitches, y'all" is a pretty misogynist thing to say.

Both these songs suck arse.

both these songs are great. bailey and collins for me pretty easy though.

"Easy Lover," easy, for the riff and the singing both; it just plain rocks harder. (I like "Maneater" fine, but Hall & Oates have done a lot better. To me, "Easy Lover" is more in a category with Kool & the Gang's "Misled," or Shalamar's "Dead Giveaway.")

In the UK, Philip Bailey is known pretty much only for "Easy Lover". Track loses points because Collins is on it along with his trademark "dum dum doosh doosh" drum sound all over the record. It's like the cymbals are mounted to a stand sticking out of your head, and Phil'n'Phil are singing behind a sofa two miles away. I think I'd like it better if Kiss did a cover version. "Maneater" has that whole "desolate" thing going on, which I like. Lyrics make less sense though "a she-cat tamed by the purr of a jaguar" oh-kay... So EL takes it in a pinch.

i always think of maneater vs. part-time lover, because of the groove similarity i guess.

Jordan, Thursday, 10 April 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't "Maneater" basically use a "You Can't Hurry Love" (aka "This Charming Man," aka "Town Called Malice", aka lots of other songs) groove?

xhuxk, Thursday, 10 April 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

sure

Jordan, Thursday, 10 April 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

but it's not a samba

xpost yes, smoothed out a bit maybe. closest h&o song to 'easy lover' to my ears is 'private eyes' probably. probably side w/ 'private eyes' just barely there cuz of teh bridge.

First I've heard of it.

It's a Stones-esque samba, and we all know they were the masters of that particular rythym.

I could never get into "Easy Lover". "Maneater" is not a fave either, but I do like the Bmin then Bmajor transformation at the end of the verses; a nice subtle touch. So that one wins.

Love both, but will vote for "Maneater" on grounds of better ad-libbing over the coda. "The woman's wild---ooh-OOOH-oo-ooh."
