it is about time.

oh wow, i didn't realize how early i was with this thread. anyhow the promo is floating around and the mix is quality. there are very few house djs that can mix the way this guy does. the style is light as a feather but completely jacking and densely layered but full of space; even my mp3 copy doesn't sound overly compressed. there are lots of nods to hip hop and a clever use of samples and mixing technique which is his style. definitely not a euro mix.

some might call it "an antidote to boring minimal"

an antidote to boring antidotes to boring minimal

Ronan, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

and boring nu-minimal house (that is actually techno with a mask on)

tricky, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

nb I still haven't heard it yet.

Ronan, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

well it is an antidote of sorts, but it has little to do with minimal.

My problem with Mark Farina is that his style (jacking, jazzy, off-kilter) seems fun at first, but 1. in 2008 lacks the sense of having breakthrough records that made him so exciting in, say, 1996, 97, 98 (Nikolai's bushes, Brett Johnson's Stucco Homes). His style feels like a re-tread. 2. his mixing never exactly goes anywhere. i'm not asking for a Euro prog-journey, but I find someone like Swag a lot more effective as a DJ.

But anyway, like others have said, nice to move away from minimal. Until the LUciano fabric mix.

paulhw, Friday, 11 April 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, more meant that he's endlessly re-treading the same style. Which I know we could say about most everyone. Maybe it was because I discovered house music through the "Seasons One" mix in 96, and nothing will ever replace that for me?

six years pass...

i saw this guy last night, expected to enjoy it but i was just completely blown away. incredibly subtle, warm and welcoming, wide range and sound palette, the loopy stuff was from another hidden planet, that bubble / butter mix where you can hear everything and the person next to you talking (it really helped that this was at the only club in town with better than ok sound afaict). i maybe wasn't into every tune but otoh i ended up being into nearly every tune! and there were a few that were actually life-changing.

just.. idk, mixing correctly! not being in the red. it's kind of a sad scene here, lol

i went to the warehouse after party with just two big butthole speakers and he still sounded great. you had to be in the right spot. it was "quiet" for that room. because he wasn't pushing his levels! amazing how not going into the red just... makes it so people can relax and enjoy. so essential. helps that he has great taste and an excellent ear obviously.
