Mr. Que, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

your face or mine was a big step up in terms of songwriting from their debut, but they lost a little of the innocence and energy that made them really special.

mizzell, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Only the second and third really rate. After Doug Boatgorilla left the band, they were a pail shadow of their former selves.

Oilyrags, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

LIVE WITHOUT A BANANA

Surmounter, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

agreed--some of the stuff on the DC tapes is them reaching back to that primal, essential DG sound, but yeah, they sorta lost their way in the jungle after the first one

Mr. Que, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

also a pale shadow.

(I was thinking about the Pail Shadow side project/supergroup, obv.)

whatever Nantucket V in particular gets the shaft, i feel, when it's really just a more nuanced production -- it may not be as raw, but it's certainly just as creative

Surmounter, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

i know this is gonna sound weird but after all these years ive finally come to grips w/the fact that nantucket v is my fav o_O

jhøshea, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

silverback shakedown is the JAM

El Tomboto, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

^^^shit i knew i forgot one

Mr. Que, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

The high points are truly among the best of the post-Boatgorilla era, but making Vtuple album at that point in their career is a guarantee that there's a lot of uninspiring filler. I appreciate the spirit of experimentation that was the origin of that stuff, but it mostly falls flat.

Oilyrags, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

I know the rest of NDH sucks according to canon but whatever haters

El Tomboto, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

ug, the 2001 remasters were way too loud i can't even stand to listen to my CD of Your Face or Mine?

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

it's true, it's like you have to really unearth the beauty of the songwriting.

Surmounter, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

I believe there's a boot doing the rounds of the 1982 gig they played as Denny Vertigo's backing band. Word is an album was planned but shelved after Vertigo went on his 2-year sabbatical in Belgium.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

have you guys heard the bootleg of the bob ezrin sessions? it's mostly songs that ended up on the first official album (which were all re-recorded), but it's cool to hear the ezrin stuff, it's a little fuller sounding i think

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

YES! definitely richer

Surmounter, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

I got the debut because of all the love on ILM, but I could never get past the vocals.

Brad C., Friday, 11 April 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

Somehow Dreamboat Gorilla needs to make it onto the positive thinking thread.

libcrypt, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

Why can't you guys talk about something popular for once? Like Janet Jackson?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

The Gorilla is bigger than the Jackson, hater.

libcrypt, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

um, hello, janet did remake "1, 2 -- run" in '93 (i think?)

Surmounter, Friday, 11 April 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

The Best Of Dreamboat Gorilla (1986)

like the name says.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 April 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

"heavy-gauge chuckleblasters of the first water" = best opening track ever

latebloomer, Saturday, 12 April 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

it's like the punkiest Yes song ever recorded

latebloomer, Saturday, 12 April 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

It's funny that the only bonus track on the 2001 reissue of Long Way To The Top is Doug Boatgorilla's acoustic reworking of "Tenzing Neither Straight Norgay," which he actually recorded a few months after his departure from the band. Sure, it's a pail shadow (haw) of the original, but it has a certain dizzy, outsiderish charm that brings Kevin Coyne to mind. Has anyone heard Doug's live solo EP, or is that the kind of rarity that only a nutter like me would even know about? ;-)

Ol Bertie Dastard, Saturday, 12 April 2008 07:10 (seventeen years ago)

It's actually kinda along the same lines as the fan-club-only holiday cassingle, "Stairway to Snowman", if you're into that sort of thing.

And don't worry anyone thinking you're crazy for obsessing about DBG. You'll find plenty of serious Boatheads on this board!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 12 April 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

It's probably unfair to blame Dreamboat Gorilla for what followed in their wake, but if only each of the 1,000 people that bought Your Face Or Mine HADN'T started a band, we'd all be better off.

briania, Saturday, 12 April 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

blasphemy

latebloomer, Saturday, 12 April 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

That tribute album from the early 1990s is not completely awful, oddly enough. Bands seemed to realize there was no way to ape DBG, so the songs were reworked pretty heavily.

Mark Rich@rdson, Saturday, 12 April 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

It's good that we have another year to get this sorted out.

Mark, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

why not 11/11/11?

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

I know this sounds contrary, but I like Boatgorilla's solo albums better than any of the DG catalog. At least the first two. You can say they were pretentious, and you can say they're "not jazz." But if Metheny thought enough of him to appear on Labors of Lost Love it counts in my book.

bendy, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Boatgorilla was a trailblazer, no doubt. The stuff he did with DG and the later collaborations was fabulous stuff, don't get me wrong, but on his own he was sublime and made music that really didn't sound like anything else. So whereas I think DG was just as good quality-wise, I can understand your point of view just because he had such a talent for innovation.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 10 May 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

"Still Live After All These Years" is sounding better and better every year! Sure, the bandmembers had changed, but I still felt that was an adequate stab at recapturing the gritty post-punk feel of their landmark "Your Face Or Mine" album from 1979. "Long Way To The Top" was a disappointment, but the '83 album had a few surprising highlights, like "Rillas Be Real" and "Ooga Booga" which was a dance smash in the clubs back then.

Anyone heard anything about the "lost" album recorded between Long Way To The Top and No Direction Home finally seeing the light of day? If so, I hope they include some of that Ezrin stuff with it, that deserves to be heard.

Mark, Friday, 27 March 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

May this thread never die. Best thing ILX ever came up with, I think.

Prodigal Son of the Gay ILX threads (Bimble), Saturday, 28 March 2009 05:31 (sixteen years ago)

It's true - where else can you find interesting discussion about DBG? Nowhere.

Mark, Saturday, 28 March 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

Hahahha we are the only one who owned the records, us! Oh my god we so exclusive & obscure.

We threw parties with a DJ downstairs, you know, in the basement. This dude played Dreamboat Gorilla all night long. And he was their manager, see, so sometimes the band would come in and play, and they'd have their tour rider as 275 bananas.

You know, in a way, "Monkey Pod (Able)" kinda makes Long Way To The Top, even though it's so unpolished compared to the rest of the stuff on side B.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

If Your Face or Mine? doesn't walk this I will lose all respect for ILM.

Death to False Meta (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

I'm afraid lurkers are going to push the Best of over the top. Back in the day, I got pretty sick of seeing college dorm rooms festooned with that rainbow-colored Tower of Pisa poster insert that Milton Glaser did for the Best of. These guys were an album band if there ever was an album band. Putting the delicate "Honey Eyes" next to a monster like "Kong Schlong Phooey" is wrong wrong wrongy.

That's a motherfucking upset!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, yeah, the keyboard sound on No Direction Home was like Sub-Journey at times, but how can you fuck with a run like the one from "Sheltered" to "New Wave Tango". I don't think we'd have half of the Stereolab sound without it. I don't think it should have won, but deserved more than 1 vote imho.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

How the fuck can a live album where Howie Bozack doesn't even play on it be voted the best DG album? I call bullshit.

Death to False Meta (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

How? The song selection. It essentially functions as The Best of Dreamboat Gorilla with a bit more energy to offset the crowd noise. The version of "Lowland Girl" destroys the original 7", to use just one example.

Mark, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

RONG

The 7" "Lowland Girl" slays pretty much anything else. Of course I may be biased because the B-side is still one of the most glorious 5 minutes of recorded music ever. I'm still convinced the engineer snuck Fripp in late one night to overdub the solo.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

I choose to view this thread as about an entirely invented band. The comments are funnier that way.

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

guess what

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

Please tell me that you people who voted for Lw/oB know that it's mostly scratch takes from the studio with crowd noise mixed in. That's why it leaves off some of the more obvious road songs from the early records- "Hard Highway Joker" and "We're Lost (Kathy)". Granted, Boatgorilla's overdubs are the last thing he did in a DBG context, and his anger comes out in those solos for sure.

bendy, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

LOL I had no idea this had become such a meme, ILX text search provides much amusement!

holy shit, did anyone else hear the rumor that Doug Boatgorilla died this week?

Dan Crust (frontman of Krusteez, who toured with DG for a few years) is tweeting about it like crazy right now. even he doesn't know if it's true or not. Dan is a notorious prankster (few people realize that he was the one behind the lobster boat incident) but other people close to Doug are wondering about his whereabouts, so this could be serious...

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

Man, I got Coachella tickets because of a surprise reunion rumor.

bendy, Friday, 1 April 2011 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

Wow. I hope that's just a rumor. : ( My cousin saw him play a private houseboat show on Lake Shasta just last month.

kkvgz, Friday, 1 April 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

well shit, Dan Crust and others have confirmed that Doug and his brother Rubius had been in the Yukon together (!). this past Monday, Rubius got homesick and headed back to the States in a tiny prop plane, but it crashed and killed everyone aboard. word got out that Doug was also a passenger, but he was actually safe and sound in the Yukon, and he hadn't even heard about the crash until Dan managed to contact him this morning.

I honestly thought Doug and Rubius were estranged, but I guess not. Rubius was the one who sold out stadiums in the late '90s with his unauthorized tribute band Dream Goat Barilla. and a few years ago he sold thousands of bootleg editions of the DC Tapes just months before they were due for an official release. good fucking riddance.

the only bad thing about this is that the Coachella thing will probably never happen :(

Comment spammers are ruthlessly capitalizing on the news about Doug Boatgorilla's adderall addiction, which is why it's been years since his last record. Hopefully he makes it through this rough patch. Kids, Doug is great musician, but just because you love his music doesn't mean you should follow his example.

^ just pre-ordered the double vinyl. Tho' I think they'd have to mess up the running order to split it across four sides.

bendy, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

Funny how "Renegade" is the shortest track on here. I have three different DougBG bootlegs (all from '02-'03) that end with a track called "Renegade." They're all about 40 minutes long and they're all chilled-out neo-hippie jams (Doug sarcastically introduces one version with, "This is our tribute to Phish"). Other than that, they may as well be three completely different songs, and I thought "Renegade" was just a made-up fan title. Maybe this 5-minute "Renegade" has nothing to do with what's on the boots.

Re: the double vinyl — apparently the first LP includes all 5 of these tracks. The second LP is a bonus disc of "sketches, interviews, dreamscapes, and field hollers". I wonder what that's about.
