Haven't thought about these dudes in a while, but just caught the killer documentary on them, Two Headed Cow, and was wondering how many fans we have here on ILM. Also, S&D...

I say search Go, Go Harlem Baby (produced by Jim Dickinson), and the rarities comp Safari...not familiar with much else...

One of my favorite bands of all time. The first three albums S/T, Harlem, White Trees, and the last one, Lucky Eye, are all great from start to finish. The first is live to two track, and the last one has lush sixties pop orchestration. Both settings suit them well. Dex Romweber's solo album Chased By Martians is also great. Dexter has given some of the most mesmerizing performances I've ever seen, and in some pretty odd places (porch of a gourmet food store, a barely announced gig at a dive bar in Boston.) He'll channel the ghosts of Eddie Lang through to Bryan Gregory onto the stage, then show you new ghosts.

i went to high school with dexter - he used to bring an acoustic guitar to school and do rockabilly numbers in the courtyard at the top of his lungs. all the black girls thought he was just the cutest thing ever.

afair he was the first person to ever get me stoned.

I only heard a tape once, in my friend's car. Meant to pick something up after that but just never saw anything out rec shoppin.

Yeah, I used to like them around the early 90s, along w/ the likes of Gallon Drunk & Buffalo Tom. Haven't heard their stuff in ages, but I recall it being some good rock/rockabilly.

i think i only ever heard go go harlem baby and the In Stereo covers ep. The latter still gets played a good bit.

Go Go Harlem Baby and some other brief tape I have (something about a prison break, maybe?) are both pretty cool.

Damn - Love this band - I don't think you'll find many with a heartbeat and a pulse that don't.

Dexter's bits are the best things in Athens GA Inside/Out.

Big fan of the first (s/t) album, Go Go just slightly less so. Saw them at an in-store in 1990, and I couldn't believe that vacuum-cleaner-looking thing they played.

Dexter has given some of the most mesmerizing performances I've ever seen, and in some pretty odd places

Last time I saw him was last summer, strumming in the alley behind the The Cave club in Chapel Hill, three stoops away from the smoking area. Just playing chords and crooning. I’d actually seen him an hour or two earlier before the sun went down, strutting down the street in a crisp orange collared shirt, looking fit with grey hair swept back. I didn’t recognize him at all- last I’d seen him was well pre-pandemic, heavy and still dark haired. He looked like an established and eccentric UNC scientist headed out for tapas.

So it wasn’t until he was with a guitar in the alley in the dark that I realized who it was. He had some patter down, but couldn’t really connect, was happy to play and seemed happier to sing. Very eerie, but he was always eerie. I’d seen him many times in various mental states, but this was unique again. Both hollowed out and healthy. If you had told me that was the last time we’d cross paths, I’d have believed it.

Looking at the Letterman performance, I’d forgotten just how jittery the whirlwind was in his prime

sounds like he was hollowed out but not too healthy, and just never got over his sister's death
