This is one of the greatest songs ever, but I think I've already said that on this board many times.

five months pass...

I could barely believe my ears when I heard DeShannon's original recording of this song recently: major-key feel, good-time gal vocal, honky tonk piano, vaudeville brass and not a hint of the famous riff.
It's like Carnes' producers composed a completely original backing track and, on a whim, decided to get her to sing DeShannon's lyrics over the top.

Former Golden Boy, Saturday, 27 September 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, the original is funny. DeShannon told me in an interview that she wanted to do it as a rock song, but that the producer insisted on the other approach.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 27 September 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

Carnes' producers did a good job there anyway. Great arrangement for certain.

Did anyone ever hear "Voyeur", the title track from her followup album? I kind of liked that song too.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 27 September 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

Great playback performance here!

I know, right?, Sunday, 28 September 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, is that a playback or is she just really great live in studio?

I know, right?, Sunday, 28 September 2008 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

This song just annoys me, but that's probably primarily overkill. All About Eve is a fine film tho. ;-)

Freedom, Monday, 29 September 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

This song rules so hard.

The More You Live The Faster You Will Die (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Monday, 29 September 2008 03:25 (seventeen years ago)

I remember back in the day it was popular, when I was ten years old, I used to write down the Top 40 every week as Kasey Kasum had it and I remember when something knocked this song off the #1 spot, I was so sad!!!

The More You Live The Faster You Will Die (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Monday, 29 September 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

I'm hearing the DeShannon version, now, and I'm total shock. I didn't even understand that it would be a woman's vocals I'd be hearing on this. I don't know why I thought it would be a man singing. But yeah, hearing the original is trippy. Total acid trip.

The More You Live The Faster You Will Die (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Monday, 29 September 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

Clicking around on Youtube for the Deshannon version (I lost my mp3), I found a cover done by Oliver North Boy Choir. Sounds cheapy, but charming.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

Surprised I never posted on this thread. An inextricable part of my early eighties 'what's this top 40 thing' upbringing, and what's especially striking about it on a relisten is remembering how *precise* the song is, immaculately sculpted.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 September 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

That's actually a really good point, I feel like its kindof like with old American Songbook type songs since its a cover, its like they tried to perfect it. Its similar in some way to that old tradition, also how she's this pro club singer and the song is pretty obscure....

I know, right?, Monday, 29 September 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

I'm stuck on repeat tonight with this one. Just listening to it before going to hit some mezcal bar and get wasted with friends. The arrangement is pure genius, her voice (Kima Carnes) is kinda warm. Is it about a hooker? She knows how to make a pro blush. Looks like i'd love a night with that girl whose eyes looks like Bette Davis'. It'd be perfect if it wasn't because of the fade out. God... I so hate fade outs. They make me think that the artist or producer never got to know how to work the end of the song which is ridiculous since it still has to be performed live... most of the times.

elgolfo, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

I hate this song. Everyone knows Bette Davis had bug eyes, and that means that this Frankenstein woman would have bug eyes. That smoker's voice sounds as bleached white as her hair. She should've been in a balls out rock band instead.

What's a mezcal bar?

I guess it's not that bad a song. I've been up too late. This song sounds terrible on a radio. It must have been made for some other medium.

bamcquern, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 10:16 (sixteen years ago)

So what of "her hair is Harlow gold", whereas Jean Harlow's hair was more 'Platinum" i.e. silver?

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 10:30 (sixteen years ago)

Fabulous post, bamcquern.

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

Mezcal bar = the result after you pour some tequila into one of those popcycle-maker things, then freeze.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

Mezcal is a popular Mexican distilled made from agave plants. God... i got so wasted... blackout and stuff.

elgolfo, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

hhahahah "and stuff"?

Always liked the moody follow-up single "Draw of the Cards" too (and it's typical Russell Mulcahy video)

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 3 January 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

oh Bimble is happy happy happy now. Thank you.

Draw of the fucking CARDS BITCHEZ

I am still more goth than everyone on this board, watch out.

With Oatmeal Sauce (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 3 January 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

In my case, Kim Carnes is more goth than me.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 3 January 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

ten years pass...

I wouldn’t love this song half as much without vektroid’s version but damn
