Me too. I'm voting AMW, but I suspect if I listened to DC or The Predator right now I might feel differently.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

deej, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

that + bop gun makes a real good argument for lethal injection
but WICKED is on 'predator'

deej, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

favorite song is "extradited" off war & peace but as with that PE thread, can't separate this from where I was when AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted came out - I bought that tape and rocked it in my '69 VW bug & on my Panasonic dual-cassette (the same one that would shortly play a key role in my umm "professional" life) in my tiny-ass employee-housing apartment, just glad as fuck all day that I wasn't in jail because I had been through some shit about a year previous etc etc etc etc I rocked that fuckin tape 'til the Cr02 came off it and I didn't know anybody who was down because I didn't know a whole lotta people period but I went by myself to see 'Cube at the Palace in H'wood anyhow and he opened with "The Nigga You Love To Hate" after jumping out of an electric chair in the "Last Words" routine and he put on a huge fur coat for "Who's the Mack?" and well you get the idea it was a special time and I don't have similar associations with other Cube albums so there you go.

voted for Kill At Will because of "Jackin' For Beats" which at the time was my favorite song ever.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

Motherfuck Billboard and the editor, I voted Predator.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

Wikipedia's list of Jackin for Beats samples:

* "If it Don't Turn You on (You Outta Leave it Alone)" by B.T. Express
* "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World", "The Payback", "Funky President" & "Funky Drummer" by James Brown
* "I Know You Got Soul" & "Hot Pants. . . I'm Coming, I'm Coming, I'm Coming" by Bobby Byrd
* "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)" by Parliament
* "Sing a Simple Song" by Sly & The Family Stone
* "Ashley's Roachclip" by The Soul Searchers
* "Bon Bon Vie" by T.S. Monk
* "Psychedelic Shack" by The Temptations
* "Hector" by Village Callers
* "More Bounce to the Ounce" by Zapp
* "Big Beat" by Billy Squier
* "Buzzsaw" by The Turtles
* "The Haunted House" by Disney
* "Welcome to the Terrordome" by Public Enemy
* "The Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground
* "100 Miles and Runnin" by N.W.A.

Its funny how this lists the "original" source samples and not the hip-hop songs actually sampled (D-Nice, X-Clan, etc.) Even so, man I miss sampling.

"Death Certificate" is a masterpiece.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

predator

^^^

i'm voting for predator -- to my ears, it's like he solidified the strengths of his 1st two (already colossally-great) records and excised some of their worst aspects (i.e., there's no "black korea" or "get off my dick & tell yo bitch to come here").

Eisbaer, Thursday, 17 April 2008 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

tho' i'm sympathetic to steve shasta's and shakey mo's advocacy for "jackin' for beats" -- that one and "dead homiez" makes "kill at will" pretty damn great too.

Eisbaer, Thursday, 17 April 2008 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

And "The Product"! An incredible story-song.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 17 April 2008 07:17 (seventeen years ago)

yeah the Product is incredible

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

The first time I bought the Kill at Will cassette, I accidentally bought the clean version (which has a different tracklisting) - and Cube has partially different lyrics on several of the songs. When I re-bought the explicit version, I found I kind of liked the clean versions better in some cases (which is the same feeling I have for the clean version of Geto Boys' "My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me" - some of those lines are a little more clever without the cussin').

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

I was overseas and hadn't been speaking much English for six months but hadn't been able to really crack jokes and have fun with the language I was speaking, and then one night I heard "Really Doe" on the radio ("if you got a herringbone/welcome to the terrordome") and bought the Lethal Injection cassette soon after. Loved "Really Doe", "You Know How We Do", and "What Can I Do?". Heard "Bop Gun" too much to appreciate it. And then there's "Cave Bitch", but...

Well, "Side One" of The Predator is my favourite half-LP of rap ever (not that I ever owned it in a 2-sided format), so that's a contender. But I'll go with the debut. The humourous bits are actually amusing for the most part (even when they're kinda sick) and giving Yo-Yo that guest spot is a nice gesture after all the bitch-dissing.

Really, those first four make for a classic quartet, a few irritants aside. (The "Do The Right Thing" samples, the Nation of Islam stuff, Flavor-Flav.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

"When Will They Shoot" is such an amazing album opener, maybe his best (altho he was always good with openings). I am still hearing new stuff in that song - I'd never even noticed the sample of Club Nouveau's "Lean On Me" cover until just the other day.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

Legitimate ZERO aside, I do think there are a couple of great songs on "Laugh Now, Cry Later." "Chrome and Paint" is good fun.
