Complex Canonical Hip-Hop of 1994

This is to complement the other poll on the subject. I think this will be interesting for a few reasons. First, obviously to see whether ILM will elect Ready to Die or Illmatic. Second, to see how the rest of the candidates do in light of their performance in the "real" part of this poll.

I decided to leave in all the choices of the other poll also even though some of them have pretty dubious claims to being "canonical" so that we can compare with the other poll.

Much as I love Ready to Die, Illmatic was still the easy choice for me.

ablaeser, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

still no spice 1. ban ablaeser

Still vote for Outkast, even though Nas is v. close.

The Reverend, Thursday, 17 April 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

Poor Coolio. Written out of history yet again.

Jake Brown, Thursday, 17 April 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

Since I voted Organized Konfusion on the other poll, I think I'm gonna vote Gravediggaz here. 6 Feet Deep is definitely better than Illmatic (my favourite Nas album is still God's Son), though I've never really listened to Biggie, so I can't say if he should win this.

Tuomas, Thursday, 17 April 2008 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

I find NAS lukewarm. I voted Ill Communication just barely over Ready to Die. Also like Digable Planets, Gang Starr, Jeru The Damaja, Method Man, and Outkast

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

yeah if only illmatic were as good as tical

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

Anybody gonna vote Keith Murray?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

'creepin on a come up', 'uncle sam's curse,' 'amerikkka's nightmare' 'constipated monkey,' maybe even boogiemonsters.

im not a huge fan of 'the outside lookin in' as ball and g albums go but it could probably be mentioned anyway.

anyone have an opinion on the erick sermon solo album?
or e-40's 'mail man'? all i know is 'captain save-a-hoe'

UGK's 'supertight' i would take over a few of the albums in this list too

oh yeah and Deion Sanders 'primetime' :D

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

have you heard the dfc's(of "...and the DFC!" fame) first album? i dug it back then but i don't think it held up last time i pulled it out. The Erick Sermon is good, sunny NY beats, a little busier and more gimmicky than what premo was doing at the time but he was right up there. not bad lyrically either. not sure i ever heard mailman all the way through

tremendoid, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

would be cool if these kinds of ilx hip hop threads would go beyond NY canon stuff now, esp since the last couple years this kind of shit has been allll over the place 'rediscovered' by the internets and not exactly obscure

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

flint represent

tremendoid, Thursday, 17 April 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

e sermon solo album = only noteworthy track is the one with Keith Murray (who has his best verse ever on it)

Don't post in a poll that basically asks "Do yoo like Biggie or Nas?" complaining why people aren't stumping for Kwest The Madd Ladd.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

Start a new thread is what i'm saying.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

The drums on 101 Things to do While I'm With Your Girl are pretty great.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

yeah the diary getting no votes really sucks. but i voted illmatic so i can't complain.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah it's almost as if there's better albums on the list.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

ok whiney.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

deej, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

so you voted for it?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

i didnt vote in this thread

deej, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

me neither - would've voted for Blowout Comb again anyway

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

it's not better than illmatic or ready to die. but it's probably as good if not better than a lot of the albums that did get votes.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

as is nearly all the rest of the non-voteds

Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)
