If this is too atomised for ya then feel free to discuss the relative merits of a) the bassline; b) the lead guitar; 3) the lead vocal; iv) the backing vocals; 5) other.

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

how about the merits of the Z-Trip remix?

I will check it out as soon as I'm done listening to this 1 1/4 hour La Monte Young drone.

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

Meh. Bog-standard Fatboy Slim type shenanigans. Beat is intrusive and ill-fitting. Remixes generally try to energise the song, this sounds weaker and emptier than the original. Why try to improve on perfection?

Mind you that tend to be my reaction whenever I hear one of these things. Sometimes I come round to them.

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

I vote for the great lost misheard lyric from the Graham Parker version:
"Forget about the car."

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

"weaker and emptier"

lol YouTube

download the full-fat version if you can find it and turn it up; it's one of the most joyous remixes i can think of - i love how it separates out all the difft elements you describe in the polll

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

this is the best bassline.

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

I'm inclined to agree. I also fucking love the way the guitar - I guess it's the rhythm guitar but it's more prominent than the lead - only plays one single goddamned chord.

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for the initial plaintive wail which i'm hoping is "Uh-huh huh huh huh"

braveclub, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

you are correct.

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

Those pretty faces always made you stand out in a crowd

Don't really get this line. Whose faces?

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

i guess he's saying she's fugly?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

I believe we had a discussion about the bassline before where it was revealed to have been played by a smooth jazz saxophone player named Wilton Felder.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

i guess he's saying she's fugly?

that's what i decided. adds an interesting depth if true.

ledge, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

Wilton Felder

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

Jordan, did you look at the last link on the "Peg" thread with the real version of "Peg" on it? There's some funny stuff that reminds me of the discussion on the Wilton Felder thread.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

i love the Partners N Crime rip of this ('We Don't Love Them Hoes')

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

no, i will.

(i voted "Bombadombadomba bom bom bom bom bom bom bom" assuming that's the main part of the bassline)

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

this song changed my life. I was 16 and had money for the first time ever (washing dishes - a two hundred dollar paycheck seemed like a king's ransom) and I bought LPs and cassettes as soon as I'd cashed it. One cassette was the best of the Supremes on one side (which was what I bought it for) and the best of the Jackson 5 on the other. The vocal performance on this song is so fucking perfect. I wonder whether it's comped from multiple takes or not - it feels so total, so engaged. Everything else about it is great too of course but Michael's response to the greatness of the song is what lifts it for me.
