feels like it was ride and james

banriquit, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

No one liked bands at my school, this wasn't the 00s.

Matt DC, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

Marilyn Manson, KoRn

Dom Passantino, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

Cypress Hill, Metallica.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

This was in the early nineties when I was in upper elementary, I don't think people wrote band names to desks after that.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

Though mostly it was tags, pussy and dick pictures, and insults directed towards others.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

Korn, definitely. A girl I was friends with liquid-papered their logo on my bag. I didn't even bother to try to remove it.

edwardo, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

Thirds for KoRn

tommytannoy, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

when i was in high school it was very cool to do a drawing of the cartoon snoop dogg from the doggystyle booklet standing in front of a marijuana leaf

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)

i personally recall carving SLAYER, PANTERA, F.N.M. and KMFDM into desks using a compass. later (around 94?) NiN was a very trendy choice, i think i carved that a few places.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

Someone wrote NWA on my pencil case and I didn't know what it meant :/

ledge, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that happened to me in like fifth grade!!

i've noticed a serious decrease in desk carving compared to back when i was in school, maybe because all the punk kids are into emo bands with horrible pretentious names like "the prom queen's yacht in flames"

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

just as i was finishing school: JAWBREAKER, 3MP, UOA, HEROIN, ANTIOCH ARROW, CLICKITAT

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

but if you wanted to do that authentically you couldn't deface public property, you had to do it on an old-school composition notebook w/ a sharpie or a fountain pen while wearing a thrift store v-neck sweater over a solid t-shirt

ANY 'COCKS' GROUPS OUT THERE BECAUSE THEY'RE SCRAWLED ALL OVER THE WALLS AT MY 'SCHOOL'

RHCP, James

Thomas, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

I remember very few desk carvings when I was in school and very few if any were bands. You were probably more likely to see a pot leaf or an Arctic Cat logo where I grew up.

I remember writing 2pac and Dr. Dre on my notebooks in middle school (early 90s).

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

INXS and U2

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:24 (seventeen years ago)

Earliest ones I remember were:

Groundhogs
Sensational Alex Harvey Band ("Vambo Rools" was v v popular)

Pashmina, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 21 April 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

Probably Led Zep. Their fans tended to be the most compulsive about display their fandom.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Yes.

I am old.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

stp, bush, metallica

roxymuzak, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

I remember my mate Brik using a compass (or protracter? I can't remember which was which now) to guage out some Deep Purple graffitti and then put The Stranglers over the top. Heady days.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

guage = gauge

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:10 (seventeen years ago)

When I was doing my O-level mocks they dug out exam desks which seemed to date back to the 16th century. On one of mine, a previous candidate had carved in the entire lyric to Bruce's 'I'm On Fire':

SOMETIMES ITS LIKE SOMEONE TOOK A KNIFE BABY
EDGY AND DULL AND CUT A SIX-INCH VALLEY
THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF MY SOUL

AT NIGHT I WAKE UP WITH THE SHEETS SOAKING WET
AND A FREIGHT TRAIN RUNNING THROUGH THE
MIDDLE OF MY HEAD

The nutjob faction seemed fond of Spear Of Destiny, too: esp 'LIBERATOR!'

Stevie T, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also punk desk graffiti was all black marker pens whereas rock ones were coloured in band symbols.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)

On the bridge over the river where I live there are STP stickers on every single light post. ITS TWO THOUSAND EIGHT!

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd lyrics...

dell, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

Rush, Slayer, and Public Enemy (this was mid- late-80s).

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

who was carving james into the desk? i mean, come on, how rebellious. sure it wasn't just some dude writing his first name?

Charlie Howard, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

and to answer the question: koRn.

slayer as well. i think it was some sort of nod to the picture featured in the sleeve of divine intervention of some dude who had carved it into his arm.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Nirvana, Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Blur and maybe some more token indie but grunge roold in Cornwall and probably still does.

There was a wall opposite the entrance to the sixth form college - so this would be 10 years ago - where marker pen graffiti bigging up Crass and UK Decay still survived. I was always pretty impressed with that

DJ Mencap, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Do you think there are bands out there coming up with logos with tree bark carveability / pencil case writeability in mind? It seems like maybe they should!

DJ Mencap, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

I distinctly remember sitting down at a desk where someone had done an excellent rendition in pen and ink of the Aerosmith logo. Very impressive to me, as someone who was continually trying to get the freaking Yes logo right, but never could.

Beyond that, Zeppelin, VAN HALEN, VH perhaps most of all.

SecondBassman, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

forgot AC/DC. that was a big one, too

dell, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, and Twisted Sister (middle school, the 80's)

Wu Tang logo

I had to wash one off of a desk once because the dean thought I had written it

It was large, too, outlined and filled in with permanent marker

My period stopped working, sorry

Zeno, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

weirdly, the new fast automatic daffodils. indeed: that's how i first heard of them.

i remember being 10 or 11 -- mid-eighties -- and seeing SEX PISTOLS carved with what must have been a fucking machete into a desk. i hadn't really heard of them at all -- i just knew they were PUNK and SCARY -- but i did think, fuck me, i bet i'm going to love that band when i hear them.

and lo, i did.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

ISTR scratching THE FALL into a few desks myself, mainly because those are easy geometric letters ;)

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

Iron Maiden
Van Halen
AC/DC
Ozzy
maybe Lynyrd Skynyrd
These were also the most likely candidates to be drawn in pen on the backs of jean jackets in my school. (usually with the arms ripped off.)

sparkletuna, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)

Carter USM
The Cure
JAMC
Pixies

(my desk, mainly)

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

from the kids in my year - pantera, pantera and more pantera.

i always thought this older girl was really cool who had 'violent femmes' on her school bag. i had never heard them and didn't til some time later, think i thought they were a was like a feminist punk band or something.

xpost

see, if i'd gone around between 1988 and 1992 carving SECTION 25 [1] and ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK [2] into desks, it would have been pretty fucking obvious whose handiwork it was :/

[1] i'm saddened, actually, that even in their home town there was absolutely no section 25 graffiti anywhere.
[2] shame there was never a handy shortened name for this band -- maybe some kind of three-letter abbreviation. would have been a boon to desk-etchers everywhere.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

I think most band names on desks at my school were put there by me or my Y8 desk neighbour. Don't remember many others - PWEI scratched into a science lab desk, RHCP, Blur, a desk with Teenage Fanclub and someone vaguely baggy on.

There were a lot of Manics song titles in biro or tippex on battered army surplus rucksacks, though. Meanwhile I missed the entire point of having such an ugly rucksack by never writing/drawing on it because I wanted to save it for when I had a really good design (never did, of course). But yeah, girls' school in early/mid-90s = half people with battered army surplus Manics rucksacks, half people with Take That stickers all over their otherwise pristine science files.

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

i had a big picture of martin hannett on my french folder in sixth form.

rather less esoterically, i had keith from the farm on my english folder.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

(my classics folder, meanwhile, had an elaborately cut-and-pasted montage involving, er, photographs of one of the classical studies teachers being inserted into various Viz cartoons. quite why he tolerated such shit, i've no idea.)

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

english dept seminar room @ tulane dominated by massive table with decades of historic band-name carvings. highlights include "uriah heep" and "dub narcotic." never thought of calvin johnson fans as table-carving types.

For some reason kids in my school were obsessed with the Doors. Maybe because the logo was easy to carve, but it was everywhere. That stupid val kilmer movie had something to do with it too. One lone kid kept carving 'Nitzer Ebb' into stuff but nobody else joined in.
