Sounds pretty great. I'm a fan, and I realize they've been writing the same song for the past 3 or 4 albums, but for pure power pop songwriting, the band's consistently high quality is pretty amazing.

loved that last album, didn't expect them to have a new one out so soon. I meant to listen to the stream last night but never got around to it.

There's only a contradiction if you don't like their song(s).

Half a good album actually adds up to a pretty shit album.

overall pretty average but there are a few gems in there: 'cheap champagne,' 'witch's wand,' and 'if i could change your mind' are all great

haha did you pick all of Jay Ferguson's songs on purpose? he is probably the most consistent on this album, though. writing a review of this right now and still kind of hashing out how I feel about it.

i honestly can't keep track of who writes what, but i suspected those were all by the same guy. he's definitely the ringer of the album

xpost Yeah Jay's gone from my least favorite back in their heyday to probably my favorite of the songwriters now.
I like 'In the Basement' as well, and 'All I Am is All You're Not', I guess.

But 'Living the Dream', 'Not a Kid Anymore', the Patrick songs, that awful cod reggae song at the end: all DUD
― G00blar, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)
it;s not "never hear the end of it" but it's quite good, for fans at least,
― Zeno, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)
haha I kinda like the reggae one! Patrick definitely bats the furthest below his usual average, though. missed them when they played the area last week, hopefully they'll tour the U.S. more than once for this record.

I started listening to the streaming version of the album but halfway through decided I'd rather be listening to One Chord to Another/Navy Blues/Between the Bridges.
[And then got sidetracked by Nintendo.]

kind of amazed how much I love the fake Dylan song.

a bit one-dimensional--you have to listen hard to really hear how good they are. the new one isn't quite as good as the last record, and they're certainly not as good as Fountains of Wayne. but they do eventually grab me most every time.
― whisperineddhurt, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)
Fountains of Wayne lose any and all credibility for Stacey's Mom, though
― asey, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)
I'm curious as to why that is asey. Do you say that because you dislike the song or the audience it attracted? Because I think the latter hardly qualifies as the bands fault. If the former, well, it's certainly not the best song the band has recorded, but its not THAT bad.
Back on topic, I enjoyed Parallel Play on my first listen, but I need to give it a little more time. I hated the reggae song though.
