Controversially, the pre-shitness era includes the Black Album, and I'm not including covers.

Master of Puppets

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

"Creeping Death" I think, over "Whiplash".

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

voted for Disposable Heroes for being awesome but not too overplayed (by me in middle school)

Jordan, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

There are quite a few slightly overlooked tunes I'd like to rep for (Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, The God That Failed, Leper Messiah), but Master of Puppets just encapsulates their strengths so perfectly, so it's that.

Creeping Death

latebloomer, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

here's where i keep trying to vote for something other than master of puppets cuz i don't wanna be all lame and obvious and end up voting for it anyway.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

I always loved Orion as much or more than anything else they did.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

I went for Orion because it's usually the song I get in the mood to hear, which then often leads to a full-on early-Metallica bender that can last for days.

rockapads, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

"Enter Sandman" cuz I'm indie.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

for whom the bell tolls

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

the song I end up singing around the house the most is "Trapped Under Ice", so I went with that.

Euler, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

battery, with damage inc. and motorbreath in close competition

John Justen, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

"nothing else matters" - Shitness: Extant!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

i mean c'mon the whole black album was shit

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

i used to put on "hit the lights" every morning before school so that one

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

I hope someone votes for "Of Wolf and Man", that song rules

Euler, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

"through the never" is the jam off the black album by far

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

I loved Nothing Else Matters and still love Unforgiven. F the rest of that album though.

rockapads, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

perhaps u don't like to rock, mr. pads.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

The God That Failed is the secret Black Album gem.

chap, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

'one', but i almost want to pick 'don't tread on me'

6335, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

Creeping Death

ciderpress, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

i hope this means we're gonna have a load/reload poll too

ciderpress, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

haha i'm working on one right now

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

ORION!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

I went with "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - fuck but they were truly great once.

J0hn D., Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

"For Whom..." inspired this young metal fan to give books a shot. Metallica probably doesn't write songs based on books anymore, does it?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, not that Metallica is the hip, influential band that all the kids are into.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "Enter Sandman" and I have no regrets about it. Don't even like the Black Album, but "Enter Sandman" blows their entire catalogue out of the wire.

My name is Kenny, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

out of the Wire?

Jordan, Thursday, 24 April 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, pretty much all of the black album tracks that weren't singles are kinda awesome

Jordan, Thursday, 24 April 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

just to be an arbitrary dick, voting for "motorbreath." i only really listen to the first one anymore, and occasionally the 5.98 ep.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 24 April 2008 04:04 (seventeen years ago)

I dream of Lars Ulrich being thrown the bus window instead of my master Mystikall Kliff Burton

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Thursday, 24 April 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

'fade to black'

with 'master of puppets' and 'one' reasonably close behind

but you know, for me i just love playing those early records from start to finish. love most of the songs

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 24 April 2008 05:14 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta go with "Nothing Else Matters", such a classic last slow song in teenage discos. Their metal songs I don't care about that much.

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 April 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)

The Four Horsemen

Siegbran, Thursday, 24 April 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

That ones better as Mechanix. Glad to see some love for Trapped Under Ice above, that song is incredible

Bill Magill, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

under the dead of night!
we the four horsemen ride
we come to take your liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Fade To Black," mainly for its first half.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

Listening to the first disc of Live Shit: Binge & Purge right now, and man what a phenomenal live set. The version of "Creeping Death" on here sends chills down my spine, so that's what I went with.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

Although the James Hetfield crowd banter is pretty laughable...

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Creeping Death"

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

"Leper Messiah," as far as studio recordings, though on Cliff 'Em All there's a version of "Whiplash" recorded during the Mustaine era, looks like the banner behind them is a spray-painted bedsheet, anyway, the tune is so fucking noisy, the sound is so dirty, it's like the fucking Jesus and Mary Chain or some nasty ass Sonic Youth guitar hurricane, married to speedmetal, I've not heard much else in my life quite like it. During the whole thing, Hetfield keeps putting his hand to his ear, he can't hear himself through the monitor in the ungodly swirl, it's beyond great.

Black Album is definitely "in the shitness," I don't see how--if you are wise enough to acknowledge the shitness at all--it can possibly be excluded.

SecondBassman, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

Man, I am really fucking town between "Puppets", "Bell Tolls", and "Trapped Under Ice".

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

Black Album is definitely "in the shitness," I don't see how--if you are wise enough to acknowledge the shitness at all--it can possibly be excluded.

It's not thrash anymore, but compare the best tracks on it with their subsequent stuff - they are tightly written, bombastic and the sound is still massive. The lead-in to the first verse of Wherever I May Roam alone shits on everything the band has since recorded.

chap, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

I will grant that "Wherever I May Roam" is the best shitness-era Metallica tune.

SecondBassman, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

these are pretty good results. arguably the 'greatest' metallica track won. 'fade to black' shoulda been more of a contender though.

hmmm what else? oh yeah, nice to see 'disposable heroes' standing out amongst the pack, but a bummer to see classix like 'jump in the fire', 'damage inc.' and 'eye of the beholder' underacknowledged.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

nine months pass...

Interesting to re-read this thread in light of Death Magnetic.

chap, Friday, 6 February 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

There is a need for a post-shitness thread. With the tracks from the black one onwards (although, admittedly, the shitness started again on "Load" - just another kind of shitness than before)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 February 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

Best post-shitness (mid-shitness?) Metallica track

chap, Friday, 6 February 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

a good winner

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

ugh.

can't believe i didn't vote for 'frayed ends of sanity'.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Saturday, 17 September 2011 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

no love for jump in the fi ya

Snop Snitchin, Saturday, 17 September 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

would maybe say Welcome Home (Sanitarium) or Blackened

Jamie_ATP, Saturday, 17 September 2011 08:11 (fourteen years ago)

The first couple of minutes of Bell Tolls are my favourite Metallica

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

Leper Messiah undervalued, massive riff
