"Creeping Death" I think, over "Whiplash".

voted for Disposable Heroes for being awesome but not too overplayed (by me in middle school)

There are quite a few slightly overlooked tunes I'd like to rep for (Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, The God That Failed, Leper Messiah), but Master of Puppets just encapsulates their strengths so perfectly, so it's that.

I always loved Orion as much or more than anything else they did.

I went for Orion because it's usually the song I get in the mood to hear, which then often leads to a full-on early-Metallica bender that can last for days.

I went with "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - fuck but they were truly great once.

"For Whom..." inspired this young metal fan to give books a shot. Metallica probably doesn't write songs based on books anymore, does it?

I mean, not that Metallica is the hip, influential band that all the kids are into.

I voted "Enter Sandman" and I have no regrets about it. Don't even like the Black Album, but "Enter Sandman" blows their entire catalogue out of the wire.

Gotta go with "Nothing Else Matters", such a classic last slow song in teenage discos. Their metal songs I don't care about that much.

Listening to the first disc of Live Shit: Binge & Purge right now, and man what a phenomenal live set. The version of "Creeping Death" on here sends chills down my spine, so that's what I went with.

Although the James Hetfield crowd banter is pretty laughable...

"Leper Messiah," as far as studio recordings, though on Cliff 'Em All there's a version of "Whiplash" recorded during the Mustaine era, looks like the banner behind them is a spray-painted bedsheet, anyway, the tune is so fucking noisy, the sound is so dirty, it's like the fucking Jesus and Mary Chain or some nasty ass Sonic Youth guitar hurricane, married to speedmetal, I've not heard much else in my life quite like it. During the whole thing, Hetfield keeps putting his hand to his ear, he can't hear himself through the monitor in the ungodly swirl, it's beyond great.

It's not thrash anymore, but compare the best tracks on it with their subsequent stuff - they are tightly written, bombastic and the sound is still massive. The lead-in to the first verse of Wherever I May Roam alone shits on everything the band has since recorded.

I will grant that "Wherever I May Roam" is the best shitness-era Metallica tune.

these are pretty good results. arguably the 'greatest' metallica track won. 'fade to black' shoulda been more of a contender though.

hmmm what else? oh yeah, nice to see 'disposable heroes' standing out amongst the pack, but a bummer to see classix like 'jump in the fire', 'damage inc.' and 'eye of the beholder' underacknowledged.

There is a need for a post-shitness thread. With the tracks from the black one onwards (although, admittedly, the shitness started again on "Load" - just another kind of shitness than before)
