I excluded covers just to be consistent with the other poll, otherwise I'd vote for "Whiskey In The Jar." as is, "Hero Of The Day" is by far my favorite although "Fuel" and "Ain't My Bitch" are alright too.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

man i remember less than half of these songs and i know i've heard these albums a least a couple of times each when they came out.

unless i get gutsy and decide to DL all them again, i might just go memory remains for being the most unlikely collabo of all time.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

My gut instinct is Fuel, but I might do a little YouTube research before making my mind up.

chap, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

Hero of the Day
Until It Sleeps
Whiskey In The Jar
Turn The Page

all better than Metallica in its prime

milo z, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

it ain't mah biiiit--cha!

latebloomer, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

No Leaf Clover is quite good in its own preposterous way. The video is hilariously po-faced, and I reckon all the OTT flutes and violins and shit are more in the spirit of Metallica than the MOR dross they were general churning out at the time.

chap, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

where's the "Yeah, We Did It" collab w/Ja Rule?

J0hn D., Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I was gonna ask that. But come on, you're not voting for that.

OOH

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

I thought about "We Did It Again" but wasn't 100% sure the whole band was on that and decided not to mess with collaborations like that.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

Ye, Metallica, sing it baby!

chap, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

It gets worse

chap, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

i read both of these polls as best "shirtless"

gr8080, Thursday, 24 April 2008 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

The Nickelback cover is, as much as it pains me to say it, far better than the Snoop Dogg one.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

forgot one

C. Grisso/McCain, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I was gonna ask that. But come on, you're not voting for that.

it has given me more pleasure than any song on the list!

J0hn D., Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

In the course of researching the answer to this thread I've been inspired to create a worst Metallica cover poll. I will do so after sleep.

chap, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

Wow...I totally forgot about "I Disappear." It still sucks, but the video has only gotten more hilarious.

But as a Metallica radio-listener and singles-enjoyer of the late-90s, I'm deeply torn between "Until It Sleeps," "Hero of the Day" and "No-Leaf Clover." Hrm.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 24 April 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

Vote for "Hero Of The Day." It's kind of fantastic.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 24 April 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

it's a two way race between 2x4 and the memory remains.

gonna go with the former.

king nothing is not a bad track as well

it's excruciatingly painful to watch lars nodding his head along to that snoop cover

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 24 April 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"King Nothing" is kind of funny as a transparent attempt to rewrite "Enter Sandman." Hetfield even throws in a "I wish I may, I wish I might have this wish I wish tonight" bit in place of "now I lay me down to sleep" etc.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

Would easily have voted for "Whiskey in the Jar," possibly my favorite Metallica track ever (give or take "Fade to Black") if it was up there. But it's not, so I went with "King Nothing" instead.

xhuxk, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

No, scratch that -- I hadn't voted yet! Went for "Until it Sleeps" instead, for having a Catholic Bosch hell video better than "Losing My Religion" and maybe as good as "It's a Sin" (and with a song tolerable enough to let me sit through the thing.)

xhuxk, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

I don't hate "Until It Sleeps" but I'm still kind of mystified that that was the song they chose to come back with, following up the biggest album of their career after a 5 year break.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

voted for St. Anger cause they all suck, so i might as well help the funniest song win

stephen, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

I love the opening drums and riff of "2X4", honestly.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

Christ this is an abysmal list.

ILX System, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

this has actually inspired me to track down a copy of Load (i have Reload on this pc already for some unknown reason)

please stop me

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

Load is still better than the albums that came after it.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

St. Anger 4

yesssssss

stephen, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

Came in here to add my love of "Hero Of The Day," what a jam

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 16 September 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

the song titles "Low Man's Lyric," "Invisible Kid" and "Carpe Diem Baby" are great, kind of proto-LULU

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

nobody voted for "outlaw torn"?

because the answer is "outlaw torn"

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

'The Outlaw Torn' is ace. As much as I think post-Black Album Metallica is patchy as hell, I'm sure I could easily pull together 45 minutes worth of decent music from Load and Reload.

Turrican, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

lol brad:

not a single vote for outlaw torn??????

Best pre-shitness Metallica track

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

so all the Metallica albums are up on Spotify and i was genuinely willing to settle back and listen to St. Anger in its entirety for the very first time and have a good old laff. but do the songs all need to be 9 minutes long?? fuck me, this is an endurance test of the highest order.

do you have the strength to know you won't go? can you find it inside to deal with what you shouldn't know?

markers, Saturday, 29 December 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago)

"Fuel" is so killer

fanute me or shoot me (some dude), Saturday, 29 December 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago)

Misread that title as "Outlaw Tom."

Doesn't live up to its potential, that.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Saturday, 29 December 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago)

The shitness is like Philip K. Dick's conception of the Black Iron Prison: we're always living in Metallica's shittiest era, we just don't know it.
