There are like, two bands who have made it big in recent times to come out of East Anglia (London discounted), and one of those is Enter Shikari. Why, when even the smallest northern towns or Welsh fishing communities can spawn huge rock, pop and dance acts can the counties of Norfolk, Bucks, Herts, Beds etc never seem to produce anything? Or am I wrong and there are a shower of great bands singing about the flatness of the Ely paddocks?

East Anglia is Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire. Maybe Essex.

Anyway to answer the question I reckon is too fucking flat and dull to inspire any kind of art.

herts and beds are east england, but not east enough to be in anglia. bucks is south east.

OK, as an Ipswich boy I'd better weigh in with some of the 'swich's contributions to music:
Nick Kershaw Plaid/two-thirds of The Black Dog Extreme Nose Terror Photek The Stupids / Klute Cradle of Flith Certificate 18 Records Vinyl Dialect Ed, the drummer in The Editors Kirk Degeorgio Pixel8
Er, stuggling a bit now - can anyone else help?
I've had the dubious pleasures of knowing one or two of these characters over the years, and of course almost all of these had to leave to get anywhere in music. I left "town" myself a few years back, but that didn't seem to help my music dreams one bit however...

most of east anglia is too close to london to have something separate going on + its biggest cities are still tiny compared to other regional centres. norwich can't have more than like 200,000 people right?
i know a guy who earns a living as a musician here in cambridge, but he plays basically all of his gigs (3-4 a week) in london. and the biggest band "from east anglia" (pink floyd) formed in ldn.
― banriquit, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

― the next grozart, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)
Coming from Herts though, I know that along the line between London and Cambridge there is a very fertile (local) music scene whihc has been blooming for za long while now. Is it simply because labels are more likely to sign bands from larger cities? Many of these bands play regularly in London.
― the next grozart, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)
they 'formed' as a bunch of friends, but also i think only one of them was at the perse, two or three were at (what is now) hills road sfc, but syd didn't actually join the band till they were in london.

would it be fair to say that East Anglia suffers from a dearth of venues for its fertile music scene to play in?
― Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)
I think you're spot-on there. Ipswich usually hovers between 1 and 2 small live music venues which rarely pu on bands from outside the county. When I lived there I had to travel to Colchester (15 miles away - Arts Centre) Norwich (40 miles away - Waterfront or Arts Centre) Cambridge (45 miiles away - The Junction and The Boat Race - RIP) or even Chemlsford and Harlow to see any decent bands, and even then a lot of bands go to neither on tour.
Norwich can't have more than like 200,000 people right?
200,000 sounds about right, there are at least 150,00 in Ipswich and Naaaridge folk are always saying how much bigger Norwich is.
― Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)
ahem, 150,000
the govt, on whose behalf i used to distribute sacks of gold on a regional basis, considers East Anglia to be Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. i hope that nugget of information helps frame this important discussion.

suffolk in particular is hard done by in terms of music venues.
norwich does pretty well with the arts centre, UEA and music friendly pubs - helped i guess by a large (art) student population.
colchester at least has the arts centre - though having seen a turnout of 15 or so at the MV+EE gig in Feb i think the promoter there may find it difficult to continue putting on the less squaddie-friendly acts.
ipswich has a couple of pubs - local punk-pop. or the regent theatre - mick hucknall.
luckily a couple of bands have been receptive to coming to play in more rural locations nearby - so we've had Duracell playing in a forest before a screening of Holy Mountain under the stars and Trencher and I'm Being Good recently came and played a village hall in Blaxhall.
― D90, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
That reminds me Suffolk does at least now have the Lattitude festival, the BLOC Weekender and there is a "electronic music and visual" all-nighter around the time of the Snape festival too with people like Mira Calix - so it's greatly improved in that respect since I moved away.
