Alex in NYC needs to weigh in here!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

dave q's proposition is that hippies = talk abt MINDS, punks = talk abt BRANES (which haha means that RUSH = PUNK)

mark s, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

"brain salad surgery" is 1973 but sadly no brains on cover

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

Although I guess it's not exactly disembodied.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

And I guess this doesn't quite count

oughtn't we add a warning if we're gonna post triggering images

J0hn D., Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

sorry

J0hn D., Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, I was totally ready to post the cover of that Big Lurch album when I remembered it's a skull, not brains, on the platter.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

Where is skot when we need him?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

i wz kinda huntin for something (raggettless) from b4 1978 -- i am happy to give rush priority if it will aggravate but it seems factually flimsy

Far from the earliest (1998) but probably one of the more gruesome.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 April 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

I thought maybe one of those early Sun Ra album covers might have a brain floating somewhere, but I couldn't find one.

o. nate, Thursday, 24 April 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Man or Astroman had a disembodied brain in a jar as part of their stage line-up.

Soukesian, Thursday, 24 April 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

close but no cigar:

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 24 April 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

o. nate, isn't that a Joel-Peter Witkin? What album is that?

Telephone thing, Thursday, 24 April 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

Naked City's Grand Guignol

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 24 April 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

noodle, what's the date of yrs?

mark s, Thursday, 24 April 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

1968 or 69 I think.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 25 April 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

Feels like there ought to be a novelty Bobby Picket-esque thing from the early sixties with a brain in a jar, but can't find one. Psych seems another good place to look, but that Open Mind cover was the closest I got last night.

latebloomer, Friday, 25 April 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

i'm convinced there's other late 60s cartoon-art covers which work the way "the open mind" does -- ie looks like wave mindwaves or is it brain-matter? but not an actual pink blobbly brain like rush so enjoy

(the actual picture on hemispheres is a kind of brain-floored cover-version of the pf "wish you were here" cover i just realised)

mark s, Friday, 25 April 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

date LB?

mark s, Friday, 25 April 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

'72 or '73 iirc

latebloomer, Friday, 25 April 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Um, mark, ...

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 25 April 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

it's admittedly a rather rare record

latebloomer, Friday, 25 April 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

So raer that ...

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 25 April 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

it's out of print

latebloomer, Friday, 25 April 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)

oh is denny vertigo the new meatls :(

their google-presence is notably ilxor-centric

mark s, Friday, 25 April 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yup. Those threads freaked out Alex in NYC.

Haha, NV, I went looking for brane by Googling Bobby Pickett and "Monster Mash" but all I got was Viv Stanshall with popping eyeballs.

In the canyons of your mind
I will wander through your brain
To the ventricles of your heart, my dear
I'm in love with you again!

when i actually write my "sir henry at rawlinson end" book i shall spend more than half of it on my "bonzo dog DDB" = "secret motor of all pop and rock culture" theory AND I WILL BE RIGHT

mark s, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

In this particular cultural geneaology of BRANES you should totally read Emily Dickinson - eg http://members.tripod.com/~ElizBrunner/Scholar/DashFour.htm

"Dickinson hefts the brain like a shopper picking through cabbages at the market" - C Paglia.

Stevie T, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

It is clear that you are very interested in wrinkled retainers, Mark.
