SSSSSSSISSSSSSSSSSSYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Noodle Vague, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

As I've mentioned elsewhere, "Concerto in X Minor" is possibly the greatest Brand Nubian affiliated track ever.

Oilyrags, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

"To the East, Blackwards" still the G.O.A.T.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

I recently dug up a disc from my back vaults by a group called Movement Ex - their one single of note was "Freedom Got a Shotgun." I'll see about zsharing (or somesuch) the album this weekend.

Oilyrags, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

can any of the ilm rap doods direct me any recent 5 Percenter stuff - are there young guys doing any full-time stuff like X Clan or Lord Jamar?

J0hn D., Friday, 25 April 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

I always liked Grand Puba "Soul Controller"

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

i happened upon a five percenter rally in the park near my house a few years ago - def seems a movement in decline - everyone was 30+

it was kinda funny the speaker was yelling all this crazy aggressive racist shit - but the crowd had the vibe of a class reunion w/little kids running around and people being psyched to see each other

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

I just ordered this new-ish bio about Clarence 13 X/Allah, hope it's good

J0hn D., Friday, 25 April 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

to be completely honest i prefer cosmic black jews - a van of theirs was parked near my house the other day w/all these crazy slogans stenciled all over it

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

Let's get an Hon. Mention for rastafarian nuttiness, too. Bunny Wailer's "I Have Never Seen the Image of a Baldhead Jesus Yet" came up on my itunes a few days ago, and that was great.

I am just helpless before cryptic religious cult stuff & esoteric teachings & so on, I never get tired of hearing about it

unfortunately most of the people writing about such stuff are sociologists - all respect to any sociologists here but I have never read a book by a sociologist that wasn't completely boring - so I usually stick to primary sources & just get completely into the cultspeak

J0hn D., Friday, 25 April 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

yah totally - ive been fucking w/the ed sanders manson bio on and off for a while O_o

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

i still need to get that crazy lord jamar record ethan was talking about with the 100 page book or whatever about 5 percent.

Ice Cube was kinda five percent for awhile....I never could quite tell the difference between repping Nation of Islam and repping strictly 5 percent shit.

Poor Righteous Teachers I think were.

This dude I remember called Jibri Wise One

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Big Daddy Kane was 5 percent I think

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Method Man, too, I'm assuming most of the clan...U God for sure

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

GZA and Killah Priest are both on last year's Wisemen album, which is 5%

J0hn D., Friday, 25 April 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

from killah priests lyrics i always assumed he was more down w/the space jews

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

why be a muslim if you aren't 5 percent? it's like turning down an offer to join the superfriends!

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

Poor Righteous Teachers, for sure. Holy Intellect is a great album. Lots of crazy Nation of Gods and Earths business all the way through their stuff.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

I was always fascinated by the notion of "Verbal Milk."

Vainglorious.

Lakim Shabazz

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

i guess superfriends is a bad comparison, 5 percenters are more like the Navy SEALs of islam

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

nation of islam is the x-men - 5% is the new mutants

Lolpez, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

I guess Ansaar is close enough to 5%

Oilyrags, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

what are the chances that a schizophrenic created 5 %ism? I'd say 85%.

Granny Dainger, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

most of the dudes i named are just str8 up muslims not 5%ers

and what, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

So if NOI are X Men and 5% are New Mutants, Ansaars = X Force?

I thought Nas was a Christian? And I haven't heard much five percentism in AZ's lyrics either, though I'm not as familiar with him as with Nas.

from killah priests lyrics i always assumed he was more down w/the space jews

Killah Priest quite freely mixes all sorts of religious imagery in his lyrics, though most of it is Christian, not Muslim. I think he even claims to be an atheist in some song.

Tuomas, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Is Divine Styler a Five Percenter or some other type of Muslim? I think Wordpower 2 is lyrically one of the most interesting Islamic rap albums.

Tuomas, Friday, 25 April 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

nas uses alot of 5% imagery in his songs but yeah i guess hes probly some weirdo religious mix cuz he talks about jesus shit too. az is def a muslim tho ive seen interviews & shit where he says he wants to use rap to teach kids about allah

and what, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

[Verse One: AZ the Visualiza]
Visualizin the realism of life and actuality
Fuck who's the baddest a person's status depends on salary
And my mentality is, money orientated
I'm destined to live the dream for all my peeps who never made it
cause yeah, we were beginners in the hood as five percenters
But somethin must of got in us cause all of us turned to sinners

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

max, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't Rakim a 5%er?

Lolpez, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

not only was rakim a 5%er im pretty sure he was the first cat to rap about it

and what, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

also that cat on the ego trip comp

and what, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

lakim shabazz was rapping around the same time as rakim too

max, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

guru uses a lot of 5% slang in his shit... its hard to tell which dudes are actual members of gods and earths and which dudes just like the supreme alphabet and the slang

max, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't a lot of it carry over from a drug gang that used it to foil cop surveillance? That's what I saw on that one tv show anyway.

Oilyrags, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

AP: What was your main religious influence, your denomination growing up?
Nas: I was surrounded by Christians ... my grandmothers, all my family was from the South, Baptist. As I got older I got into the 5 Percent Nation, and then that pushed me toward Islam. But (I'm not any) religion.
AP: Would you consider yourself agnostic?
Nas: I consider myself (pauses) I know there's a higher power.

max, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think that Wikipedia list of Five Percenters is reliable, it has people like Funkdoobiest and Vanilla Ice on it.

Tuomas, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

hmm, you think?

max, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

Why'd you link it then?

Tuomas, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

tuomas if only 100% useful content was required in every post ilx would have been shut down in 2001

max, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

I think he even claims to be an atheist in some song.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

the thing is that nation of gods and earths doesnt claim to be a religion--its a "culture" and youre supposed to study all the major world religions

new X-Clan album (Mainstream Outlawz) is great if you loved the last one, which I did - big mellow hammond sounds, soul crooning harmony choruses here and there, classic pissed-but-positive lyrics. Bun B verse on "Thru My Eyez."

damn I love X-Clan so much.

say man it's big Bun B, I got ghetto respect
OG up in the hood I keep the ghetto in check
pointin out when the man is showin ghetto neglect
cuttin through the red tape to show the ghetto effect
or the effect on the ghetto when the government don't
cause the government can't, or the government won't
that's why I'm still in the hood
you know I gotta keep it trill in the hood (say what?)
'cause life is still real in the hood
grippin wood grain [peel?] in the hood
let me take you on a tour of the corners where they kill in the hood
cause we got (what?) black on black, and black on brown
brown on black, brown on brown
it's really goin down
when we all one and the same
and we all really know who the blame
man it's time to start changin the game
and it's time to start changin the aim
it's no surprise where the enemy lies
wanna see? take a look through my eyes
