LSG's "Hearts" is one of the big seminal, influential trance records that defined the genre. One I'm really not into at all, but I admit this must have been pretty fresh-sounding in '94.

Bit of a curveball here, imo.

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

Bodrick III, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta be Portishead really.

chap, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

Never even heard of these guys:
At the time, I was 13 and probably didn't know about most of these acts except Nirvana. Would have heard Ash, Elastica, Pulp and Supergrass when they got big the following year. The only stuff here I'd still bother with is the dancy stuff like Orbital and Mazzy Star, who I only discovered couple of years ago anyway.

Still have no clue about these:

Done Lying Down
Madder Rose
That Dog
Salt Tank
ROC
Tuscadero

Bodrick III, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

I know Mazzy Star isn't dance, such a badly worded post...

Bodrick III, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Every single thing on this list would have seemed incredibly exotic and exciting to me at the time. This was my generation of 'just getting into indie' so I'm finding it near impossible to be cynical about this list.

I voted for Sour Times anyway.

Matt DC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

That Salt Tank record was quite good - kinda lite trancey iirc - but I preferred Eugina by them.

I have no idea what that ROC thing was but there's a version here...

...which leaves me pretty cold.

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 27 April 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, imagined Salt Tank to be sort of pop punk/indie for some reason.

Bodrick III, Sunday, 27 April 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

I vote H Foundation - Laika.
And if anybody has a decent digital version...ahem...my old 12" is all scratched to merry hell. Also anyone know what piece of classical music is sampled on it?

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 27 April 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

Gold Soundz
We Are Here
Dirty Epic
Ping Pong
Common People !!!!

?????
Pavement wins it - I never realised I was that much of a fan and that my taste in music was so lame

Peely - where's all yer Punk Rock gone?!!

Fer Ark, Sunday, 27 April 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Loads of good stuff but is anything really great? I couldn't vote for Portishead because it's just not that good a song compared to most of the rest of the album.

Mark C, Sunday, 27 April 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

There's this track called Common People that one or two people may rate quite highly, Mark.

What exactly is Dirty Epic doing here in 1994 though? Was it rereleased or something?

Matt DC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

I should be noted that Different Class had not been released yet, and that particular version of "Common People" was from a Peel Session.

billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

I think Dirty Epic was a 94 single.. possibly.

billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

Peely - where's all yer Punk Rock gone?!!

Punk rock in 94 wasn't as gritty.. therefore making it less peel-friendly.

billstevejim, Monday, 28 April 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

bumping just because

billstevejim, Sunday, 4 May 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

That Inspirals/MES track was GRATE.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 4 May 2008 08:20 (seventeen years ago)

Seems much less eclectic than what got played on the show, was that normally the case for the festive 50s?

Voted for the lazy hazy summery perfection of Gold Soundz.

ledge, Sunday, 4 May 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, the Festive 50 represented the gothtard vote who didn't get it.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

In fact sometimes records would be on the chart that Peel hadn't even played.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

Sabres of Paradise - Wilmot

stone cold classic

ledge, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, I think this was the only time he played "Loser."

billstevejim, Sunday, 4 May 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

I have voted for Dirty Epic.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

i have also voted for Dirty Epic. Saw it live twice this year! Greatness confirmed.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 4 May 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)
