CONTRARY VIEWPOINT: "The Good Life", just ahead of "Undone".

buddy holly

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

Say it Ain't So.

Why do people like Islands in the Sun? It's really really dull.

chap, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

watch the first 6 tracks listed clean this up

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, green album is my favorite Weezer album by miles, but I was surprised that they chose that one as a single. Two possibilities:

1.) Hip, hip
2.)MOFGthis: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2hyoszso38E

gman, Sunday, 27 April 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

I like a lot of these, but really, that "Undone" is a singular achievement can hardly be denied.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 27 April 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

The Good Life.

Matt DC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

Everything after the 1st 6 feels like it's from a different band.. like post-Warning Green Day.

There are lots of stupid people who hate Undone.

billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone who votes for On Drugs will be executed later tonight by a firing squad in a similar manner to that skit on You Cant Do That On Television.

billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a stupid person who hates on "Undone." I like some of the early singles ("Say It Ain't So" especially) but I think I'll vote for one of the later ones (probably "Keep Fishin'" or "Perfect Situation") just to protest the general idea that these jokers were at one point an amazing band that fell off instead always being a pretty so-so band.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

awful band. voted for Beverly Hills to fuck with the poll results.

stephen, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

Island In the Sun
Photograph

not as overplayed as the first six (just tried listening to those again, I could do without hearing the Blue Album or Pinkerton ever again), not crap like Dope Nose and everything after

I think it goes to Island

milo z, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

Photograph sounds unfinished to me.

billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Say It Ain't So" manages a goofy/depressing thing that a bunch of their tunes aim for but never quite make happen. And the guitars are huge.

Savannah Smiles, Sunday, 27 April 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Buddy Holly" deserves to walk this.

Nailed it. Also, not that I go to Weezer for my good-time, feel-good jams, but "Island in the Sun" is a total good-time, feel-good jam. And there's the bridge where it threatens to get a bit heavier for a second but never quite does, and goes back into that sunny acoustic riff.

I should note that the singles from Green and Maladroit were the first Weezer I heard, so that is where my bias lies. (Except for "Photograph" which is dull and I never heard at the time anyway, and "Dope Nose" which is just kind of eh.)

The Reverend, Monday, 28 April 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Undone, but I wouldn't object if any of the first six won.

Island in the Sun isn't an awful song like Dope Nose or Beverly Hills, but there's nothing very special or weezer-y about it. It feels to me like anybody could've written it, something I definitely don't get from the early singles, particularly the Pinkerton ones, which are singularly amazing.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Monday, 28 April 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

I miss the days when the "guitar solo" section of Weezer songs suddenly arrived along with a brilliant chord modulation.. the one in "The Good Life" is outstanding. I sorta wish I voted for that one. oh well.

God yes. It's hard to beat Across the Sea in that department, I think. Or in any department, really.

Would have voted for "The Good Life," though I never heard it on the radio or MTV or anything. Looking at this, I'm realizing I prefer some of the post-Pinkerton singles (Hashpipe and Island in the Sun and maybe Beverly Hills) to some of the pre-Pinkerton singles (Buddy Holly and Say It Ain't So at least.) Still don't comprehend why somebody would prefer the debut to Pinkerton. Maybe I will someday.

xhuxk, Saturday, 3 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Uh, well, the debut is fun for one thing. There are happy songs about goin' surfin' and being a geek in the garage, and going "hoo hoo!" on Buddy Holly, and "woah-oo woah-oo woah" on the sweater song, and going on a HOLL-iiih-DAY, and on and on. I think a lot of the first album songs could have fit on Pinkerton without much trouble, but the vague quantity of "hookiness" is surely more present on the former.

This isn't to knock Pinkerton (although I don't prefer it)...it just seems odd to claim that you could see no reason why someone wouldn't go for the fuzzy, grumpy, less singable-alongable record, where "Why Bother" is the upbeat highlight.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 3 May 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

I'm also in the camp that finds the purported "darkness" of Pinkerton to be kind of juvenile and repetitious - whereas somehow the angsty moments on the blue album are actually more mature and relatable-toable for their greater ambiguity.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 3 May 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

Nah, I always thought Pinkerton had better hooks, too; it never struck me as an especially dark record, either. (And stuff like "Islands In the Sun" sounds way catchier and sunnier than the melodies in "Buddy Holly" and "Say Ain't So," which always sounded flimsier than people pretended.) But if people hear the debut that way, what you're saying makes sense, I guess, at least in theory.

xhuxk, Saturday, 3 May 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember if I voted here or not (i'm drinking wine!!) but of course I would have picked Say It Ain't So, and if someone else would too there had been a tie.

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

eight years pass...

who on earth prefers the sweater song to say it ain't so?

Treeship, Thursday, 2 June 2016 15:17 (nine years ago)

Evan R, Thursday, 2 June 2016 15:35 (nine years ago)
