I don't consider 1988 a particularly good albums vintage, but hitlist music was better than in 1987. At least in the UK.

Voted "Heart", but "Sign Your Name" and "Somewhere In My Heart" are also great contenders. Alpng with "He Ain't Heavy..", which nevertheless is obviously not really 1988.

Yeah, I still had to vote for He Ain't Heavy.
Regardless.

S-Express probably, certainly the most forward-looking thing here. I like Somewhere In My Heart a lot as well.

Also Respect is an immaculately crafted piece of pop.

"Teardrops", but strong competition from "House Arrest", "Theme From S-Express" and "Beat Dis".
Now lets see the fucking Pet Shop Boys win again.

S-Express probably, certainly the most forward-looking thing here.

In the second half of the 80s, being "forward-looking" was rarely a good idea.

Man I got trapped in a pub in a 1988 with a drunk old dude who kept making us put "One Moment in Time" on the jukebox. Great times.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 April 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway I voted for "A Little Respect" why because it got the best opening line and payoff refrain ever.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 April 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm. In a sense it's still "Always On My Mind", but I voted for that in 1987 and I can't really count it as part of 1988.

So the shortlist reads: The Only Way Is Up, Theme From S-Express, Teardrops, A Little Respect.

Hmm. Think I'll keep it between me and the ballot box in this instance.

Is Geir Dale Winton?

The Top Five is a perfect reminder of everything that was wrong about 1988. Sure, "A Little Respect" is not at all a bad song, but it's probably the furthest Erasure ever got from their synthpop roots, and as such, one of their worst moments.
