yeah the first one especially starts and ends well. the second one does too (starts well in particular -- "on the air" to "d.i.y.").

The melted face one is his best ever album, so it has to be that one.

I have a soft spot for 4. He overegged it in the end, but the basic ideas were great.

1. Melted Face (3)
2. Wet Car (1)
3. Security
4. The lame 2nd one

I like the fact that there are two threads that are just called Peter Gabriel.

It was cool how Gabriel tried to reinforce the eponymous idea by just putting his name on the spines of all of his reissues in 2002 in that same typeface (along with a bit of the cover art), even for the ones that had titles.

Is there a thread on artists with multiple self-titled albums? Maybe this one comes closest. Excluding people who just used numbers, there's Caetano Veloso and I think a bunch of other '60s Brazilian artists.

My ranking would probably be the same as Roger's.

I would say 3 >> 4 > 1 >>> 2

one year passes...

He's going to hold me together tonight...again. I worship him even more than Brian Eno, and that's saying something.

I was still more rock and roll than anyone needed for the album (Bimble), Saturday, 9 May 2009 08:14 (sixteen years ago)

It's a shame (1982) only got one vote. I still like (1980) more, but the margin between them is razor thin.

nine years pass...

For a long time this would have been the third record, but nowadays I find I'm increasingly coming back to his fourth - I love the emphasis on rhythm and epics on that record, and I love the production on it. So is probably my favourite overall, though.

five years pass...

man, is "Shock the Monkey" the first single to go top 40 in America to use Fairlight CMI synths?

Probably something by Trevor Horn. Frankie goes to Hollywood? Owner of a Lonely Heart?

"Shock the Monkey" charted in late '82/early '83, so no!

someone rich! Stevie?

This toned down version of Here Comes The Flood is fripping amazing imho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUwwfLszU4w

StanM, Friday, 15 December 2023 20:45 (one year ago)

Yeah, even Fripp believes that this is the definitive version of Flood

sawdust lagoon, Friday, 15 December 2023 23:21 (one year ago)

Stevie's "Happy Birthday" (1981) has a Fairlight but it wasn't released as a single in the US oddly

Josefa, Friday, 15 December 2023 23:33 (one year ago)

xp I agree with that. When I recompiled my own version of Shaking the Tree, I swapped out the 1990 re-recording (to be fair, a good recording) and replaced it with that exact same one from the original version of Fripp's solo debut.

birdistheword, Saturday, 16 December 2023 00:07 (one year ago)

Fripp's Water Music I is also essential to that version of Flood, which may have been why PG chose to rerecord it for Shaking The Tree. It was the next best thing...
