THE CONSEQUENCES ARE REAL
[/i]
‘Consequences’ features contributions from over a dozen rockstars including Beth Ditto, Paul Weller, The Enemy and Supergrass.

All proceeds from the sale of this track go to Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. Visit crisis.org.uk for full details.

Inspired by the parlour game ‘consequences’, in which participants write a story or draw a figure without seeing each other’s input, each part of the song – drums, bass, guitar, vocals, etc – was recorded by artists unaware of what had been laid down before.

Produced by Paul Epworth, the track was built layer by layer to create a bombastic Phil Spector-esque Wall of Sound. With driving guitars from The Enemy, a Beach Boys bassline from Andy Rourke (The Smiths), vocals from Weller and Ditto, thumping beats from Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, and a guitar-bending solo from Graham Coxon, the track is a fusion of Motown and indie rock.

- Vocals – Beth Ditto, Paul Weller, Tahita Bulmer (New Young Pony Club), Pearl Lowe
- Guitar – Paul Weller, Graham Coxon, Tom Clarke (The Enemy), Drew McConnell (Babyshambles)
- Bass – Andy Rourke (Smiths), Andy Hopkins (The Enemy), Gaz Coombes (Supergrass), Andy Spence (New Young Pony Club)
- Drums – Danny Goffey (Supergrass), Liam Watts (The Enemy), Sarah Jones (New Young Pony Club)
- Piano – Ed Harcourt
- Saxophone – Pete Warem (Acoustic Ladyland)
- Percussion – Jamie Morrison (The Noisettes)

Three of Crisis’ own homeless members also feature on the track – playing guitars and piano – after successfully auditioning in an X-factor style competition overseen by Crisis officials.

The record release was prefigured by a live gig at the Roundhouse in early March. Consequences Live saw members of the superband – plus Dirty Pretty Things and Reverend & The Makers – perform a live and exclusive rendition of the track, alongside their own material.

Just cause I hadn't heard anything about this, and here it is.

Tragedy of the year.

Surely the participants must have had SOME idea of what went on before - chord changes, key the song was in etc? Otherwise it'll just be a bunch of people making a load of random noise on a multitrack tape.

Do you MOCK the Enemy?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, put on a great show opening for an Akron/Family secret show and they were totally cool, chatted with Colin and Chris a bit. I knew they were from your neck of the woods so I began my conversation with "So do you guys know Maps of Norway?" Instant icebreaker!

As I say, I'm more surprised that this is 'in shops' now,

1) Recorded in November, previewed 'in a pub' in Feb, why it take so long for d/l to be available, as well as the 'physical' release?

2) The link above, a 'remix' competition, seems to be trying to generate 'excitement' for something that seems to have lost it, if it had any to begin with...

We can only hope that this is as successful as that Jarvis/Ditto collab.

Is 3pworth still injecting smack between his toes?

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

That Jarv/Ditto collab was a duet they released and gave the proceeds to charity.

This seems to be a 'charity organised' thing, but it's not exactly setting alite.

Or am I a meringue? Is it hitting the media as we speak? Or is it so diabolically awful that no-one wants it?

It'll never better the original:

OK, taking it back: There's loads in HMV, and I got to hear it: It's alright, actually. That ever popular Motown/Spectorish default backing, Beth Ditto in "new song" shock, and Supergrass do the chorus in a "um, who let them interrupt Beth?" kind of way.

Mark G, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

No Peter Cook, no cred.
